  1. 21. Stroke and Functional Recovery - An experimental study on environmental influence and gene expression after cortical infarcts in the rat

    Författare :Anette Risedal; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; cortical infarct; rat; enriched environment; functional recovery; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; inducible transcription factors; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; glucocorticoids; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the western world, and the number one cause of disability. 85% of all strokes are ischemic. Most stroke survivors will experience recovery of function. The mechanisms behind this improvement are partly unknown, but may involve elements of both compensation and restoration. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Kidney Hyaluronan : Regulatory Aspects During Different States of Body Hydration, Nephrogenesis & Diabetes

    Författare :Louise Rügheimer; Peter Hansell; Cecilia Johnsson; Örjan Källskog; Mats Rundgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physiology; hyaluronan; kidney; dehydration; hydration; diabetes; nephrogenesis; renomedullary interstitial cells; CD44; hyaluronan synthase; hyaluronidase; vasopressin; nitric oxide; prostaglandins; glucocorticoids; angiotensin II; diuresis; lymph vessel; podoplanin; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The kidney regulates the excretion of water and electrolytes, which maintains homeostasis and enables control of arterial blood pressure. Hyaluronan, a large negatively charged interstitial glucosaminoglycan, is heterogeneously distributed within the kidney, primarily found in the medulla. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Alterations in peripheral glucocorticoid metabolism : effects of weight changes

    Författare :Kotryna Simonyté; Cecilia Mattsson; Bo Angelin; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 11ß Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1; obesity; glucocorticoids; cortisol; phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase; adipose tissue; liver; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background: An important role has been suggested for tissue-specific glucocorticoid metabolism in the development of obesity and its complications. 11ß hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11ßHSD1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the interconversion of biologically inactive cortisone to active cortisol, thereby regulating its access to glucocorticoid receptors in target tissues. 4. 24. On new and current treatments for Diamond-Blackfan anemia

    Författare :Sara Sjögren; Avdelningen för molekylärmedicin och genterapi; []
    Nyckelord :Diamond-Blackfan anemia; Erythropoiesis; Ribosome biogenesis; Heme synthesis; Glucocorticoids; p53; Globin translation; HRI; a1-microglobulin;

    Sammanfattning : Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare congenital disease where the patients suffer from macrocytic anemia due to reduced numbers of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow. Most patients carry mutations in ribosomal proteins, such as ribosomal protein S19 (RPS19), which causes deficient ribosome biogenesis and affects protein translation. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Författare :Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Sammanfattning : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. LÄS MER
