  1. 1. Stroke and Functional Recovery - An experimental study on environmental influence and gene expression after cortical infarcts in the rat

    Författare :Anette Risedal; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurology; neuropsychology; cortical infarct; rat; enriched environment; functional recovery; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; inducible transcription factors; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Neurologi; glucocorticoids; neurophysiology;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the western world, and the number one cause of disability. 85% of all strokes are ischemic. Most stroke survivors will experience recovery of function. The mechanisms behind this improvement are partly unknown, but may involve elements of both compensation and restoration. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Astrocyte metabolism following focal cerebral ischemia

    Författare :Anna E Thoren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Astrocyte; metabolism; focal cerebral ischemia; reperfusion; infarct; [1-14C]acetate; [U-14C]glucose; glutamine; glutamate; ATP; ADP; lactate; MCT4; immunogold cytochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and death. Most often, stroke results from blockage of an artery in the brain leading to tissue infarction within the perfusion territory of the affected vessel. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Nuclear magnetic resonance and microcirculation: The influence of pulsatile brain-tissue motion on measurements of intravoxel incoherent motion and assessment of haemodynamics using exo- and endogenous tracers

    Författare :Ronnie Wirestam; Lund Medicinsk strålningsfysik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diagnostic radiology; cortical activation; diffusion; tumor; tumour; ischemic stroke; ischaemic stroke; tracer kinetics; bolus tracking; phase mapping; brain motion; intracranial dynamics; blood flow; haemodynamics; vascularity; MRS; perfusion; MRI; magnetic resonance; Clinical physics; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Sammanfattning : In this project, the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy in studies of microcirculation and haemodynamics was evaluated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of human pulsatile brain-tissue movements in healthy individuals, relevant for the understanding of the cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) circulation and the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus, were thoroughly investigated. 4. 4. Post-Ischemic Housing Conditions Influence On Gene Transcription And Translation After Permanent Focal Brain Ischemia In Rats

    Författare :Li-Ru Zhao; Sektion IV; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rats; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; mRNA; nerve growth factor-induced gene A; corticosteroid receptors; in situ hybridization; Neurologi; neurophysiology; Neurology; neuropsychology; brain ischemia; enriched environment; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Enriched environment (EE) housing significantly ameliorates neurological deficits induced by cortical brain ischemia without changing infarction size, suggesting that EE-related functional benefits are associated with neuronal plasticity events in the remaining tissue. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor-induced gene A (NGFI-A) and corticosteroid receptors (mineralocorticoid receptor, MR; glucocorticoid receptor, GR) have been demonstrated to be involved in brain plasticity. 5. 5. Neurogenesis and gliogenesis after focal brain ischemia. Modulation by enriched environment and exercise

    Författare :Mila Komitova; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :astrocyte; hippocampus; neural progenitor cells; neural stem cells; neurogenesis; neurotrophins; rat; regeneration; rehabilitation; stroke;

    Sammanfattning : New neurons are formed from dividing neural stem cells in restricted areas in the adult mammalian brain: the dentate gyrus of the hippocampal formation (DG) and the forebrain subventricular zone (SVZ). New glia also form constitutively and seem to be important for neuronal function. LÄS MER
