11. Mathematical Reasoning : In physics and real-life context
Sammanfattning : This thesis is a compilation of four papers in which mathematical reasoning is examined in various contexts, in which mathematics is an integral part. It is known from previous studies that a focus on rote learning and procedural mathematical reasoning hamper students’ learning of mathematics. LÄS MER
12. Mathematical Reasoning in Physics Tests : Requirements, Relations, Dependence
Sammanfattning : By analysing and expanding upon mathematical reasoning requirements in physics tests, this licentiate thesis aims to contribute to the research studying how students’ knowledge in mathematics influence their learning of physics. A sample of physics tests from the Swedish National Test Bank in Physics was used as data, together with information of upper secondary students’ scores and grades on the tests. LÄS MER
13. Between symbols and words : structural connections in mathematics texts and their effect on reading
Sammanfattning : While students progress through their school years, they are expected to develop reading skills in all academic subjects, including mathematics. Mathematics texts, being multisemiotic, require readers to make meaning not only from written language but also from mathematical symbols and visualizations. LÄS MER
14. Modes of Mathematical Modelling : An analysis of how modelling is used and interpreted in and out of school settings
Sammanfattning : The relevance of using mathematics in and for out-of-school activities is one main argument for teaching mathematics in education. Mathematical modelling is considered as a bridge between the mathematics learned and taught in schools and the mathematics used at the workplace and in society and it is also a central notion in the present Swedish mathematical syllabus for upper secondary school. 15. On Mathematical Reasoning : being told or finding out
Sammanfattning : School-mathematics has been shown to mainly comprise rote-learning of procedures where the considerations of intrinsic mathematical properties are scarce. At the same time theories and syllabi emphasize competencies like problem solving and reasoning. LÄS MER
