  1. 1. Mathematical Reasoning : In physics and real-life context

    Författare :Helena Johansson; Mats Andersson; Jesper Boesen; Morten Blomhøj; Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Creative mathematical reasoning; Descriptive statistics; Differential item functioning; Figurative context; Imitative reasoning; Mathematical Reasoning Requirements; Mathematics tasks; National tests; Physics tasks; Real-life context; T-test; Upper secondary school;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis is a compilation of four papers in which mathematical reasoning is examined in various contexts, in which mathematics is an integral part. It is known from previous studies that a focus on rote learning and procedural mathematical reasoning hamper students’ learning of mathematics. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On Mathematical Reasoning : being told or finding out

    Författare :Mathias Norqvist; Johan Lithner; Bert Jonsson; Catarina Rudälv; Kristina Juter; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; mathematics education; creative reasoning; reasoning; cognitive proficiency; fMRI; didactics of mathematics; matematikdidaktik;

    Sammanfattning : School-mathematics has been shown to mainly comprise rote-learning of procedures where the considerations of intrinsic mathematical properties are scarce. At the same time theories and syllabi emphasize competencies like problem solving and reasoning. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Robust Stream Reasoning Under Uncertainty

    Författare :Daniel de Leng; Fredrik Heintz; Patrick Doherty; Nick Hawes; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stream reasoning; stream processing; temporal reasoning; spatial reasoning; configuration planning; intelligent robotics;

    Sammanfattning : Vast amounts of data are continually being generated by a wide variety of data producers. This data ranges from quantitative sensor observations produced by robot systems to complex unstructured human-generated texts on social media. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Mathematical Reasoning in Physics Tests : Requirements, Relations, Dependence

    Författare :Helena Johansson; Mats Andersson; Jesper Boesen; Kerstin Pettersson; Institutionen för matematiska vetenskaper Göteborgs universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : By analysing and expanding upon mathematical reasoning requirements in physics tests, this licentiate thesis aims to contribute to the research studying how students’ knowledge in mathematics influence their learning of physics. A sample of physics tests from the Swedish National Test Bank in Physics was used as data, together with information of upper secondary students’ scores and grades on the tests. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Exploring Probabilistic Reasoning : A Study of How Students Contextualise Compound Chance Encounters in Explorative Settings

    Författare :Per Nilsson; Inger Wistedt; Lennart Hellström; Dave Pratt; Växjö universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Probabilistic reasoning; randomness; compound chance encounters; contextualisation; differentiation; elaborative variation.; MATHEMATICS; MATEMATIK; Mathematical Didactics; Matematikdidaktik; Mathematical Education;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aims at exploring how probabilistic reasoning arises in explorative learning situations that are random in nature. The focus is especially on what learners with scant experience of formal theories of probability do and can do when dealing with compound random situations in which they are offered opportunities to integrate different probabilistic lines of reasoning.
