1. Modelling of drug-effect on time-varying biomarkers
Sammanfattning : Model-based quantification of drug effect is an efficient tool during pre-clinical and clinical phases of drug trials. Mathematical modelling can lead to improved understanding of the underlying biological mechanisms, help in finding shortcomings of experimental design and suggest improvements, or be an effective tool in simulation-based analyses. 2. Biogas generation in landfills : equilibria, rates & yields
Sammanfattning : Landfilling in "cells" has become more common in recent years. Different waste streams are guided to different cells, among which the biocell is a landfill designed for biogas production. In this thesis, the dependence of biogas generation on waste composition was investigated. LÄS MER
3. Pharmacodynamics of Enzyme Induction and its Consequences for Substrate Elimination
Sammanfattning : Enzyme induction is a process whereby a molecule enhances the expression of enzymes. If the affected enzymes are involved in the elimination of a drug, this may result in a drug interaction. Induction is therefore of major concern during drug development and in clinical practice. 4. Essays on Firm Turnover, Growth, and Investment Behavior in Ethiopian Manufacturing
Sammanfattning : This thesis analyses the dynamics and investment behavior of Ethiopian manufacturing firms in post-reform period using establishment level industrial census panel data from 1996 to 2003. Three related topics such as firm turnover and productivity differentials, determinants of firm growth, and the effect of adjustment cost and irreversibility on firm investment decisions are investigated empirically. 5. Studies on mRNA turnover in bacteria
Sammanfattning : Genetic information, which is stored in DNA, is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA) in a process called transcription. mRNAs are then translated by ribosomes into proteins which, with some important exceptions, catalyze chemical reactions in cells. Since cells must be able to adapt to changes in the environment, mRNAs must be unstable. LÄS MER
