1. A close-up on neutrophils : Visualizing the mechanisms of their in vivo recruitment and function
Sammanfattning : A successful immune response depends on prompt and sufficient recruitment of leukocytes from the circulation to infected or injured sites. Mobilization of leukocytes to hypoxic tissues is vital for angiogenesis, i.e. the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting vasculature, and thus crucial for tissue growth and regeneration. 2. JNK/c-Jun Signaling and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration
Sammanfattning : The events associated with axonal injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) have been described in detail. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regenerative response, or neuronal cell death, following axonal injury are poorly understood. LÄS MER
3. Studies on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Microdispensing, Neurite Guidance and Galectins
Sammanfattning : The present thesis describes development of a microdispenser-based technique to create of protein patterns for neurite guidance. The same technique was also developed to allow direct positioning of dissociated cells, including neurons, on cell culture substrates. Finally the role of galectin-3 and 8 during nerve regeneration was investigated. LÄS MER
4. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its possible role as a neurotrophic factor. I have investigated the effect of VEGF on neurons in culture but also in vivo, following a crush lesion of the sciatic nerve, and following nerve repair. LÄS MER
5. Macrophages, Nitric oxide synthases and Heme oxygenases: possible roles during peripheral nerve regeneration
Sammanfattning : The purpose of this study was to investigate the suggestions that macrophages, and the systems generating nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO), i.e. nitric oxide synthases (NOS) and heme oxygenases (HO), could be important for peripheral nerve regeneration. LÄS MER
