  1. 1. Regional Lung Mechanics and Influence of an Active Diaphragm in Experimental Lung Injury

    Författare :Mariangela Pellegrini; Anders Sune Larsson; Göran Hedenstierna; Michael Quintel; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute respiratory distress syndrome; artificial respiration; diaphragm; pulmonary atelectasis; lung imaging; respiratory system; animal model; Fysiologi; Physiology; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Sammanfattning : Despite being an essential life-support strategy in severe respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation can, if not optimally set and monitored, lead to injury of the lung parenchyma and diaphragm. These conditions are called ventilator-induced lung injury and ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction (VIDD), respectively. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies on stress in African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) : Stress associated cortisol and prolactin levels, lymphocyte modulation and pathological changes in adrenal cortex, stomach and hippocampus in the African green monkey (C. aethiops)

    Författare :Mbaruk Abdalla Suleman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; adrenal cortex; capture; confinement; cortisol; husbandry; housing; hippocampus; lymphocytes; prolactin; stomach; stress; wild; African green monkeys; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : African green monkeys (AGMs) are highly susceptible to captivity-induced stress. An investigation of spontaneous deaths of laboratory confined AGMs at the Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi, Kenya over a period of 7.5 years documented mild to severe gastric mucosal erosions and ulcers in 83 of 260 (32%) necropsies. 3. 3. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in the Assessment of Respiratory Mechanics

    Författare :Gaetano Perchiazzi; Göran Hedenstierna; Björn Jonson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; artificial neural networks; respiratory system compliance; respiratory system resistance; respiratory system time constant; intrinsic positive end expiratory pressure; PEEPi; animal model; acute lung injury; oleic acid; Otis model; Fysiologi; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to test the capability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to estimate respiratory mechanics during mechanical ventilation (MV). ANNs are universal function approximators and can extract information from complex signals. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Lung mechanics and airway inflammation in murine models of asthma

    Författare :Sofia Jonasson; Josephine Hjoberg; Hedenstierna Göran; Carl Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allergic asthma; airway inflammation; murine models; lung mechanics; forced oscillation technique; airway reactivity; deep inhalations; oxidative stress; nitric oxide; glucocorticoids.; Clinical physiology; Klinisk fysiologi; klinisk fysiologi; Clinical Physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and increased airway reactivity. In the studies presented in this thesis, lung mechanics and measurements of airway reactivity were assessed in anaesthetized tracheostomized mice by using an animal ventilator (flexiVent®). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Diabetes-induced Alterations in Renal Microcirculation and Metabolism

    Författare :Fredrik Palm; Per Liss; Peter Hansell; Per-Ola Carlsson; Gerald DiBona; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Diabetes-induced renal complications, i.e. diabetes nephropathy, are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The exact mechanism mediating the negative influence of hyperglycaemia on renal function is unclear, although several hypotheses have been postulated. LÄS MER
