11. Markers predicting sensitivity to polyamine depletion in human breast cancer cell lines
Sammanfattning : In spite of different treatment strategies today, breast cancer mortality is still high and new treatments are therefore needed. Potential new treatments can be found among the polyamine analogues. Polyamine analogues can be used in cancer treatment as cancer cells have a higher requirement for polyamines than the surrounding healthy tissue. LÄS MER
12. Some Aspects of Physicochemical Properties of DNA and RNA
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on nine research publications (I – IX) on structure and reactivity of RNA vis-à-vis DNA. The DNA and RNA are made of flexible pentose sugar units, polyelectrolytic phosphodiester backbone, and heterocyclic nucleobases. DNA stores our genetic code, whereas RNA is involved both in protein biosynthesis and catalysis. LÄS MER
13. Fatty Acyl Reductases and Fatty Acyl Desaturases. Deciphering the biosynthesis of species-specific moth female sex pheromones from common fatty acids
Sammanfattning : Moths (Lepidoptera) are dependent on female produced pheromones, chemical signals, for attracting a mate. Pheromones are most commonly made up by saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acid derived alcohols, acetates, and/or aldehydes that are produced by a set of enzymes in the female pheromone gland. 14. Biosynthesis and biological role of leukotrienes in B lymphocytes
Sammanfattning : Leukotrienes (LT) are potent lipid mediators, synthesized from arachidonic acid (AA) upon cell activation. The essential enzyme for leukotriene biosynthesis is 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), converting AA, through a two step process to LTA4. The activity of 5-LO is dependent on 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP). LÄS MER
15. Pathology of dNTP dysregulation
Sammanfattning : Deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) are precursors for DNA replication and repair. Mammalian cells have two distinct biosynthesis pathways to supply dNTPs: de novo and salvage pathways. LÄS MER
