3. Insect immunity : fractionation and characterization of some immune proteins induced by primary infections of giant silk moth pupae
Sammanfattning : A potent antibacterial activity in hemolymph of giant silk moth pupae is demonstrated. The system is inducible and RNA and protein synthesis are needed for the expression of the activity. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were found to be susceptible. The activities could be selectively inhibited, indicating a multicomponent system. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : The effects of insect herbivores on forest functioning are not well understood even though they can have important impacts on ecosystem processes by intercepting foliage before resorption and depositing nutrient-rich materials to the soil. In this thesis, I investigated the impact and drivers of insect folivores on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si) cycling in broadleaf forests, and how this varies with major climate variables. 5. Visual ecology of insect superposition eyes
Sammanfattning : In the superposition compound eye each rhabdom (light sensitive unit) receives light through many ommatidial facets, while in the apposition compound eye every rhabdom receives light from a single facet.
