  1. 21. The effects of neurotrophic substances on primary sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Petri Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :DRG; dorsal horn; NGF; BDNF; NT-3; substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase; carbonic anhydrase; microglia; astroglia;

    Sammanfattning : Sensory impulses from the periphery is transmitted by primary sensory neurons located in dorsal root and cranial nerve ganglia. The primary sensory neurons are phenotypically diverse with regard to their expression of various chemical components. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Factors influencing the turnover of olfactory receptor neurons

    Författare :Maja-Lena Deckner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; rat; olfactory bulb; olfactory epithelium; axotomy; regeneration; apoptosis; BBB; VEGF; blood vessels; trophic factor; BDNF; trkB; tenascin;

    Sammanfattning : The olfactory system has a striking capacity for neuronal plasticity throughout life and the olfactory epithelium is able to generate both neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the normal adult animal as well as after experimental injury. In contrast to primary sensory neurons, olfactory axons are able to cross the border between the PNS and CNS in the olfactory bulb after transection in the adult animal. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Gluco- and mineralocorticoid receptor regulation of regional brain neurotrophism

    Författare :Anita Christiane Hansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neurotrophins; BDNF; NT-3; bFGF; FGF receptor; immediate early genes; c-fos; antisense oligodeoxynucleotides; adrenalectomy; stress; glucocorticoids; mineralocorticoids; glucocorticoid receptor; mineralocorticoid; receptor in situ hybridization.;

    Sammanfattning : Gluco- and mineralocorticoid hormones exert powerful actions on brain function and are important in the mediation of the stress response and the survival of hippocampal neurons. The aim of this thesis was to study the influence of glucocorticoid (GR)/mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) actions on brain neurotrophism including analyses of immediate early genes (IEGs) and of feedback responses on GR and/or MR. 4. 24. Regulation of CGRP expression in rat spinal motoneurons

    Författare :Fredrik Piehl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; motoneuron; axotomy; peptides; CGRP; trophic factor; FGF; IGF; BDNF; CNTF; GAP-43; cell culture; plasticity; mRNAregulation; regeneration;

    Sammanfattning : The normal distribution and lesion-induced changes in the expression of neuropeptides and growth-related proteins, with special reference to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),were studied in the motor system of the rat. In addition, factors that influence the expression of CGRP in motoneurons were identified. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Peripherally administered choleocystokinin-8 increases neurotrophins in the brain

    Författare :Paola Tirassa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :NGF; BDNF; CCK-8; glutamate; GABA; CCK receptors; hypothamalus; hippocampus; Choline Acetyltransferase; fimibria-fornix transection; vagotomy; vagal stimulation; RT-PCR; ELISA;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that the gastric hormone Cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) can modulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF is the first discovered and the best characterized neurotrophic factor which plays a crucial role in the survival and development of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCN). LÄS MER
