    Sammanfattning : Preterm birth (< 37 complete gestation weeks, GWs) is the single most prominent risk factor for the development of cerebral palsy (CP). This is due to the immature physiological state of the preterm born infant which increases the risk of brain lesions. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to describe and determine intensive care sedation in adult mechanically ventilated patients with the emphasis on patients? memory, stressful experiences and psychological distress. The results are based on a nationwide postal survey (Paper I) including 89 Swedish intensive care units (ICUs) followed by a prospective cohort study (Papers II?IV) conducted over 18 months in 2 ICUs including 313 mechanically ventilated adults admitted for more than 24 hours.     Sammanfattning : Esophageal pH monitoring is important in the clinical management of patients with symptoms suggestive of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and in research aiming to clarify the mechanisms involved in the development of GERD complications. Catheter-based techniques for pH recording are uncomfortable, not well tolerated by all patients and cannot reliably measure acid exposure in the most distal esophagus the region most prone to reflux-induced complications.
