1. Endogenous sex hormones and cardiometabolic risk factors – population-based studies within the Skaraborg Project
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are the major contributors to mortality in Sweden and globally. Men have a higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases compared to women, until women reach the menopause. Levels of sex hormones might explain these sex differences beyond known differences in risk factors. LÄS MER
2. Endogenous hormones in the etiology of ovarian and endometrial cancers
Sammanfattning : The main purpose of this thesis was to examine the relationship of pre-diagnostic circulating levels of sex-steroids (androgens and estrogens), sex hormone binding globuline (SHBG), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), IGF binding proteins (BP) and C-peptide (as a marker of pancreatic insulin secretion) with risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer. Additionally, the interrelationships of body mass index (BMI), sex-steroids, IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were examined. LÄS MER
3. The EGF-like Modules of Anticoagulant Protein S. Studies of Ca2+ binding and module interactions
Sammanfattning : Protein S functions as a cofactor to activated protein C (APC) in the degradation of factors Va and VIIIa. In plasma protein S circulates in two forms; 30-40 % circulates as free protein S molecules while the remaining 60-70 % exists in a 1:1 complex with C4b-binding protein (C4BP). Only the free form of protein S functions as a cofactor to APC. LÄS MER
4. Protein Interactions Involving the Laminin G-type Domains of Vitamin K-dependent Protein S
Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis focus on the involvement of the two laminin G-type domains of vitamin K-dependent protein S in various biological contexts. The G-type domains are located in the C-terminal sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)-like region. LÄS MER
5. Obesity and Effects of Bariatric Surgery - with a Certain Focus on Women's Health
Sammanfattning : Severe obesity influences sex hormone levels in women, which may result in subfertility, menstrual disturbances, anovulation and hyperandrogenism as well as increased risk for complications during pregnancy and birthing. Bariatric surgery leads to long-term weight loss and resolution of several comorbidities including hormone imbalance. LÄS MER
