1. Pilicides and Curlicides : Design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel antibacterial agents targeting bacterial virulence
Sammanfattning : New strategies are needed to counter the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. One such strategy is to design compounds that target bacterial virulence, which could work separately or in concert with conventional bacteriostatic or bactericidal antibiotics. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : The extracellular matrix is (ECM) is a network of large, structural proteins and polysaccharides, important for cellular behavior, tissue development and maintenance. Present thesis describes work exploring ECM as scaffolds for tissue engineering by manipulating cells cultured in vitro or by influencing ECM expression in vivo. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Laboratory analyses, essential in screening, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease, are indispensable in health care, but appropriate utilization is intricate. The overall aim of this thesis was to study the use of laboratory tests in Sweden with the objective to evaluate and optimize test utilization. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating disease that affects people in their late mid-life, with fatal outcome usually within a few years. The progressive degeneration of neurons responsible for muscle movement (motor neurons) throughout the central nervous system (CNS) leads to muscle wasting and paralysis, and eventually affects respiratory function. 5. Characterization of IgY for Oral Immunotherapy and Prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections in Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Sammanfattning : Chicken antibodies, commonly referred to as IgY, have several properties that make them suitable for oral treatment of infections and there is essentially no risk for development of resistance. The overall aims of this thesis were to investigate Anti-Pseudomonas IgY as prophylaxis against infections with Pseudomonas aeruginosa for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients and to characterize the antibody treatment.
