1. Chitosan biopolymer as an adsorbent for drinking water treatment : Investigation on Arsenic and Uranium
Sammanfattning : In many countries over the world (including Sweden), metal toxicity in freshwater resources causes a severe drinking water quality problem and poses a threat to the environment and human health. Among the different toxic metals in the water resources of Sweden, arsenic and uranium are the biggest threats to health. LÄS MER
2. Improving properties of poly(lactic acid) biopolymer for use in food packaging
Sammanfattning : The petroleum-based plastics are widely used for food packaging applications because of their low cost, easy processability, and tunable properties to meet the specific needs of food packaging. However, these polymers are non-biodegradable, leading to a substantial amount of plastic waste in both land and marine ecosystems. LÄS MER
3. Flow processing and gel formation for producing biopolymer drops with functional shapes and diffusion properties
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the development of novel processes which combine flow-induced drop deformation and simultaneous temperature-induced gel formation in order to create shaped biopolymer drops. The drops are functional in terms of rheology and diffusion properties, factors strongly influencing the consistency of food products and flavour or drug release. LÄS MER
4. Rheological Behaviour of Biopolymer Gels in Relation to Structure
Sammanfattning : The rheological behaviour of biopolymer gels with different network structures was studied to elucidate how the structure of the gel influences its rheological properties. Non-destructive viscoelastic measurements and fracture techniques were used. LÄS MER
5. Structure Evolution during Phase Separation and Gelation of Biopolymer Mixtures
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the kinetics of phase separation and gelation in aqueous mixtures of gelatin and maltodextrin. The structure evolution of these mixtures at different length scales was recorded by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The microstructure was quantified by image analysis. LÄS MER
