1. Radical Cyclization Approaches to Pyrrolidines
Sammanfattning : Five-membered rings are readily prepared by 5-exo-trig radical cyclization. This thesis is concerned with novel methodology for pyrrolidine synthesis. We have synthesised selenium containing radical precursors from aziridines and α-phenylseleno ketones, and cyclized them to 2,4- and 3,4-disubstituted pyrrolidines. LÄS MER
2. Palladium(II)-Catalyzed Reactions of Allenes with Lithium Bromide and Cyclization of α-Amino Allenes to Pyrrolines
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on three novel palladium(II)-catalyzed reactions of allenes with lithium bromide and a bromonium ion induced cyclization of allenyl amides to pyrrolines. In Paper I a 1,2-functionalization of allenes is presented where bromide adds as a first nucleophile followed by intramolecular attack by an oxygen or nitrogen nucleophile. LÄS MER
3. Development of new Catalytic Methods for the Selective Synthesis of Heterocycles
Sammanfattning : In the field of organic chemistry, the development of new catalytic methods for the synthesis of complex molecules from simple precursors is a top priority. The main focus of this thesis concerns the diastereoselective synthesis of heterocyclic compounds using main group elements as Lewis acid catalysts. LÄS MER
4. Making Radical Cations Live Longer
Sammanfattning : The acid-catalyzed rearrangement of 1,4,5,8-tetramethylnaphthalene was used to determine the acidity of media used for EPR spectral studies of radical cations. The radical cations of methyl-substituted naphthalenes were shown to undergo dimerization reactions. LÄS MER
5. The Role of Proline Catabolism in Candida albicans Pathogenesis
Sammanfattning : Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that has evolved in close association with human hosts. Pathogenicity is linked to an array of virulence characteristics expressed in response to environmental cues and that reflect the requirement to take up and metabolize nutrients available in the host.
