1. On Bone Regeneration in Porous Bioceramics - Studies in humans and rabbits using free form fabricated scaffolds
Sammanfattning : The objective of the present thesis was to evaluate the effect of material chemistry and macroand micro-porosity on bone regeneration in association with synthetic, porous ceramic materials. Ceramic scaffolds were designed and manufactured for experimental and human studies using free form fabrication (FFF), a technique which produces the object layer by layer using data from CAD files. 2. Exploring expandable microspheres as a novel pore former in gel-cast macroporous alumina
Sammanfattning : Expandable microspheres have been explored as sacrificial templates for the production of macroporous ceramics. Concentrated alumina powder suspensions that contain expandable microspheres have been consolidated by gel-casting. LÄS MER
3. Shaping Macroporous Ceramics : templated synthesis, X-ray tomography and permeability
Sammanfattning : Macroporous ceramic materials have found widespread technological application ranging from particulate filters in diesel engines, tissue engineering scaffolds, and as support materials in carbon capture processes. This thesis demonstrates how the pore space of macroporous alumina can be manipulated, analysed in three-dimensions (3D) using visualisation techniques, and functionalised with a CO2-adsorbing material. 4. Physical Properties of Acidic Calcium Phosphate Cements
Sammanfattning : The gold standard for bone replacement today, autologous bone, suffers from several disadvantages, such as the increased risk of infection due to the need for two surgeries. Degradable synthetic materials with properties similar to bone, such as calcium phosphate cements, are a promising alternative. LÄS MER
5. Soil compaction: effects on soil hydraulic properties and preferential water flow
Sammanfattning : Soil compaction caused by passage of agricultural machinery over the surface is an issue in many agricultural soils with a high clay content. Compaction is known to modify soil pore structure and soil hydraulic properties, but can also affect the occurrence of preferential flow. LÄS MER
