1. Coping with Stress : Regulation of the Caulobacter crescentus cell cycle in response to environmental cues
Sammanfattning : All organisms have to respond to environmental changes to maintain cellular and genome integrity. In particular, unicellular organisms like bacteria must be able to analyze their surroundings and rapidly adjust their growth mode and cell cycle program in response to environmental changes, such as changes in nutrient availability, temperature, osmolarity, or pH. 2. Generation and metrology of ultrashort pulses and their application in attosecond science
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the dynamical processes in atoms and small molecules initiated by the absorption of ultrashort, coherent light pulses. The studied phenomena takeplace on the femtosecond (1 fs = 10−15 s) and attosecond (1 as = 10−18 s) timescales and critically depend on the properties of the light fields that drive them. LÄS MER
3. Spatial and temporal metrology of intense attosecond pulses
Sammanfattning : Attosecond pulses are short enough to capture the electronic dynamics in atoms and molecules. The work presented in this thesis deals with the generation and optimization of attosecond extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) pulses. LÄS MER
4. Uropathogenic Esherichia coli, multidrug-resistance and induction of host defense mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the primary cause of urinary tract infection (UTI), which is one of the most common infections in humans. UPEC strains have acquired successful strategies to subvert the host defense and antibiotics to persist in the urinary tract. LÄS MER
5. Plasma environment of an intermediately active comet : Evolution and dynamics observed by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft at 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Sammanfattning : The subject of this thesis is the evolution and dynamics of the plasma environment of a moderately active comet before, during and after its closest approach to the Sun. For over 2 years in 2014-2016, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta spacecraft followed the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at distances typically between a few tens and a few hundred kilometers from the nucleus, the longest and closest inspection of a comet ever made.
