  1. 36. Discovery of Novel Receptors for Lipid Mediators - a study leading to the identification of receptors involved in metabolism and the immune system

    Författare :Niclas Nilsson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Klinisk biologi; Clinical biology; Thiazolidinedione; SCFA; FFA; FFA2R; FFA1R; GPR43; GPR41; GPR40; BLT2; GPCR; Orphan; Receptor;

    Sammanfattning : Intercellular communication is of crucial importance in regulating physiology and G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) have evolved as an important mechanism in this process. Of the approximately 800 human GPCRs, about 160 are still considered to be “orphan” receptors for which an endogenous ligand remains to be identified. LÄS MER

  2. 37. Mechanisms and mediators of apoptosis : with special reference to hematological disorders

    Författare :Bengt Fadeel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :apoptosis; Bcl-2; caspases; chemotherapy; chronic granulomatous disease; familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis; Fas; homology-based modeling; neutrophils; phosphatidylserine; reactive oxygen species;

    Sammanfattning : Life and death are inextricably entwined. Naturally occurring cell death or apoptosis is essential for the of homeostasis and serves to remove extraneous or dangerous cells in a swift and unobtrusive manner. work has demonstrated that such cell death is genetically regulated and transpires according to evolutionarily conserved pathways. 3. 38. Statins, Lipids, and Mutations: Consequences for the Heart and Immune System

    Författare :Emil G. Ivarsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CAAX Proteins; Statins; RHO Proteins; Dilated Cardiomyopathy;

    Sammanfattning : CAAX proteins are a group of proteins that undergo a three-step protein maturation process that renders the proteins carboxyl-terminus hydrophobic and prone to localize to cellular membranes, where they have their primary function. The first step in this process is called prenylation, which is the covalent attachment of a lipid, either a 15-carbon farnesyl or a 20-carbon geranylgeranyl lipid, to the carboxyl-terminal cysteine residue by the enzymes farnesyltransferase (FTase) and geranylgeranyltransferase type I (GGTase-I), respectively. 4. 39. Innate immune responses in vivo after antigen administration : implications for vaccine development

    Författare :Frank Liang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Inducing high magnitude of antibodies with epitope breadth over prolonged periods of time is likely a prerequisite to prevent several of the world’s most serious infectious diseases such as HIV-1, malaria and tuberculosis for which there are no vaccines yet. A much better understanding of the innate immune mechanisms that are critical for inducing strong responses to vaccination is therefore essential. LÄS MER

  5. 40. The role of natural killer cells and inflammatory mediators in preeclamptic pregnancies

    Författare :Nora Bachmayer; Eva Sverremark-Ekström; Katarina Bremme; Lucia Mincheva-Nilsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; preeclampsia; NK cells; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : The maternal immune system must be able to adjust during pregnancy and accept the foetus that expresses paternal antigens. These changes are found both in placenta and circulation, including a mild inflammatory response. NK cells are abundant during the early part of pregnancy in placenta and are thought to be important for placental development. LÄS MER
