6. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro
Sammanfattning : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates. 7. Role of respiratory supercomplexes : Electronic connection between complexes III and IV
Sammanfattning : In the final step of cellular respiration, electrons are transferred through the respiratory chain to reduce molecular oxygen to water. The energy released in this chain is used to maintain a proton electrochemical gradient across the cell membrane, which is used, for example, by the ATP synthase to produce ATP. LÄS MER
8. Studies on spinach plastocyanin and mutants : Expression in Escherichia coli, folding and function
Sammanfattning : Photosynthesis is a process in which photons from sunlight excite chlorophylls in the thylakoid membranes of plants, algae and cyanobacteria. The photo-oxidised reaction centre chlorophyll P700 is re-reduced by an electron transferred from the soluble, blue copper protein plastocyanin. LÄS MER
9. Alpha-1-microglobulin, heme-binding protein, reductase and antioxidant
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes structural and functional studies of alpha-1-microglobulin (a1m), a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein that is evolutionarily well-conserved and belongs to the lipocalin superfamily. The lipocalins are polypeptides of 160-190-amino acids that are folded into an 8-stranded beta-barrel forming a pocket with a hydrophobic interior. LÄS MER
10. Choreography of a proton pump : Studies of charge-transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase
Sammanfattning : In the last step of cellular respiration, electrons from metabolites are transferred to molecular oxygen, mediated by the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain. Some of these enzyme complexes couple these redox reactions to formation of an electrochemical proton gradient across the cell membrane. The proton gradient is used e.g. LÄS MER
