  1. 1. Choreography of a proton pump : Studies of charge-transfer reactions in cytochrome c oxidase

    Författare :Jóhanna Vilhjálmsdóttir; Peter Brzezinski; Joachim Heberle; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme-copper oxidase; cytochrome c oxidase; respiration; proton pump; electron transfer; proton transfer; proton-transfer pathway; midpoint potential; proton-pumping mechanism; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : In the last step of cellular respiration, electrons from metabolites are transferred to molecular oxygen, mediated by the enzyme complexes of the respiratory chain. Some of these enzyme complexes couple these redox reactions to formation of an electrochemical proton gradient across the cell membrane. The proton gradient is used e.g. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Tailing Charges on New Paths : Ultrafast intramolecular charge transfer in chromophores

    Författare :Belinda Pettersson Rimgard; Leif Hammarström; Oliver S. Wenger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; intramolecular charge transfer; interligand electron transfer; electron transfer; proton transfer; concerted electron-proton transfer; Marcus inverted region; solvent; temperature; femtosecond spectroscopy; proton-coupled energy transfer; Chemistry with specialization in Physical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : By tailing charges on their paths within a molecule, one can gain fundamental knowledge of their inherent reactivity. The charges, originally residing in their lowest energy configuration, can upon light absorption move across the system, or transfer in between them. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Electron and proton transfer in cytochrome c oxidase

    Författare :Magnus Brändén; Peter Rich; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cytochrome c oxidase; electron transfer; proton transfer; proton; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Sammanfattning : This doctoral thesis describes results from studies on the mechanisms by which the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase catalyses the reduction of oxygen to water. Cytochrome c oxidase is the last integral enzyme complex of the socalled respiratory chain in the mitochondrial inner membrane (plasma membrane of bacteria). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Proton transfer in nitric oxide reducing heme-copper oxidases

    Författare :Joachim Reimann; Pia Ädelroth; Peter Brzezinski; Michael Wilson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; heme-copper oxidases; nitric oxide; proton transfer; electron transfer; proton-transfer pathway; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : Heme-copper oxidases (HCuOs) are best known as terminal oxidases in the aerobic respiratory chain, in which they catalyze the reduction of oxygen to water. By receiving protons and electrons from opposite sides of the membrane as well as pumping protons, HCuOs contribute to the electrochemical proton gradient over the membrane that can be used for ATP synthesis. 5. 5. Nitric Oxide Reductase from Paracoccus denitrificans : A Proton Transfer Pathway from the “Wrong” Side

    Författare :Ulrika Flock; Pia Ädelroth; Simon de Vries; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; denitrification; nitric oxide reductase; heme copper oxidase superfamily; divergent member; proton transfer; electron transfer; single turnover; spectroscopy; periplasm; glutamate; proton pathway; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Denitrification is an anaerobic process performed by several soil bacteria as an alternative to aerobic respiration. A key-step in denitrification (the N-N-bond is made) is catalyzed by nitric oxide reductase (NOR); 2NO + 2e- + 2H+ → N2O + H2O. LÄS MER
