  1. 1. Optical spectroscopy in biomedicine - detection of embedded inclusions and in vivo pharmacokinetics

    Författare :Jenny Svensson; Atomfysik; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; temperature; Atomic and molecular physics; Atom- och molekylärfysik; photosensitizer; photodynamic therapy; fluorescence spectroscopy; multispectral imaging;

    Sammanfattning : The main theme of this thesis is the use of fluorescence spectroscopy in biomedicine. The work presented in the thesis can be divided into three areas of applications. The first area involves the use of fluorescence to find the location of a deeply situated fluorophore within turbid media. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Device Fabrication and Photosensitizing Role of ZnO Nanostructures in Photodynamic Therapy of Cancer

    Författare :Kishwar Sultana; Magnus Willander; Omer Nour; Arne Rosén; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Zinc oxide nanostructures; light emitting diodes; reactive oxygen species; photosensitizer; cancer cell; photodynamic therapy; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : In nanoscience and nanotechnology, zinc oxide (ZnO) is gaining much research attention due to direct wide band gap (3.3 eV), large exciton binding energy (60 meV), and deep level defects emissions that cover the whole visible range. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : A detailed understanding of natural photosynthesis provides inspiration for the development of sustainable and renewable energy sources, i.e. a technology that is capable of converting solar energy directly into chemical fuels. This concept is called artificial photosynthesis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro

    Författare :Jonas Fyrestam; Conny Östman; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Porphyrins; heme; phototherapy; antimicrobial resistance; singlet oxygen; photosensitizer; bacteria; HPLC-MS MS; oral bacteria; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Escherichia coli; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates. 5. 5. Photodynamic therapy and laser-based diagnostic studies of malignant tumours

    Författare :Ingrid Wang; Medicinskt lasercentrum; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; protoporphyrin IX PpIX ; delta -aminolevulinic acid ALA ; photosensitizer; basal cell carcinoma BCC ; Photodynamic therapy PDT ; laser-induced fluorescence LIF ; Cytology; oncology; cancerology; Cytologi; onkologi; cancer;

    Sammanfattning : Two non-thermal regimens of light interaction with biological tissue, that are in a natural way connected, are discussed in the present thesis. These are photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of malignant tumours and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for tissue characterization. LÄS MER
