6. Pathophysiology of blood-brain barrier, brain edema and cell injury following hyperthermia : New role of heat shock protein, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide : an experimental study in rat using light and electron microscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the molecular mechanisms of hyperthermia induced brain damage in rats. The results clearly establish that hyperthermia caused by 4 h heat stress at 38° C is associated with a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability which seems to be instrumental in causing brain edema and cell injury. 7. Sleep disordered breathing : Natural evolution and metabolism
Sammanfattning : Sleep disordered breathing is manifested by snoring and repeated episodes of apneas and hypopneas. The induced hypoxia and sleep fragmentation are thought to be responsible for many metabolic disturbances. In 1984, 3,201 men aged 30 to 69 answered a questionnaire on snoring, sleep disorders and somatic diseases. In 1994, 2,668 of the survivors (89. LÄS MER
8. Atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery : an analysis of risk factors, mechanisms, and survival effects
Sammanfattning : Background: Despite the recent improvements in surgical techniques and postoperative patient care, atrial fibrillation (AF) remains the most frequent complication after cardiac surgery. Although postoperative AF is often regarded as a benign clinical condition, this arrhythmia has significant adverse effects on patient recovery and postoperative survival. LÄS MER
9. Stress Coping Strategies in Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta): Ecological Significance and Effects of Sea-Ranching
Sammanfattning : Two distinct stress coping strategies, proactive and reactive, have been stated in various animal studies, each associated with a set of behavioural and physiological characteristics. In a given challenging situation, proactive animals show more aggression, a higher general activity and a predominant sympathetic reaction. LÄS MER
10. Levosimendan in early experimental sepsis: effects on the heart and hepatosplanchnic circulation
Sammanfattning : Sepsis-related cardiovascular dysfunction associated with fluid-unresponsive tissue hypoperfusion might require inotropic treatment. This cardiovascular dysfunction seems to involve calcium desensitization and adrenergic unresponsiveness. LÄS MER
