21. Perspectives on the Biological Role of Human Prostasomes
Sammanfattning : Prostasomes are extracellularly occurring organelles which are secreted in human semen by the prostate gland. Prostasomes have several known biological activities, but their physiological function is still unclear. In this thesis some new aspects were studied on the biological role of the prostasomes. 22. Antimicrobial materials from cellulose using environmentally friendly techniques
Sammanfattning : The transition to a more biobased society introduces both new opportunities and new challenges as we replace nonrenewable materials with renewable alternatives. One important challenge will be to control microbial growth on materials, both to protect the materials from biological degradation and to prevent the spread of infections and toxins that can cause illness. 23. Synthesis and functionalization of ring-fused 2-pyridones : Targeting pili formation in E. coli
Sammanfattning : Bicyclic dihydrothiazolo fused 2-pyridones have been studied as a new class of antibacterial agents, termed pilicides, that target the formation of adhesive bacterial surface organelles (pili) in pathogenic bacteria. Synthetic methods to further functionalize the bicyclic 2-pyridone scaffold have been developed in order to increase water-solubility and thereby facilitate biological evalua-tions. LÄS MER
24. Interaction Between Antimicrobial Peptides and Phospholipid Membranes : Effects of Peptide Length and Composition
Sammanfattning : Due to increasing problems with bacterial resistance development, there is a growing need for identifying new types of antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides constitute an interesting group of substances for this purpose, since they are believed to act mainly by disrupting the bacterial membrane, which is a fast and non-specific mechanism. 25. Antiadhesive agents targeting uropathogenic Escherichia coli : Multivariate studies of protein-protein and protein-carbohydrate interactions
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes studies directed towards development of novel antiadhesive agents, with particular emphasis on compounds that prevent attachment of bacteria to a host-cell. Three different proteins involved in the assembly or function of adhesive pili in uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been targeted either by rational structure based design or statistical molecular methods.
