  1. 1. Infections Related to the Use of Medical Devices and Changes in the Oropharyngeal Flora

    Författare :Hulda Thorarinsdottir; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; thrombosis; critical illness; biofilm; intratracheal intubation; ventilator-associated pneumonia; ; central venous catheters; catheter-related infections; proton pump inhibitors; oropharynx; MICROBIOTA; foreign-body reaction; hemolysis; inflammation;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Humans exist in mutualistic balance with a large range of microbiota. Illness and hospitalization can disturb this balance and contribute to hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), which occur most often in critically ill patients. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Carbon monoxide and nitric oxide as antimicrobial agents : focus on ESBL-producing uropathogenic E.coli

    Författare :Charlotte Sahlberg Bang; Katarina Persson; Bo Söderquist; Annelie Brauner; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biofilm; carbon monoxide; CORM-2; DETA NO; extendedspectrum beta-lactamases; nitric oxide; urinary tract infection; uropathogenic Escherichia coli; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in humans and most often caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli). Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli are increasing worldwide and they are frequently multidrug-resistant with limited treatment options. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Regulatory roles of sRNAs in pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae

    Författare :Dharmesh Sabharwal; Sun Nyunt Wai; Bernt Eric Uhlin; Jörgen Johansson; Cynthia Sharma; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vibrio cholerae; sRNA; Biofilm; OmpT; RbmC; Vrp; VafA; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The Gram-negative pathogen Vibrio cholerae uses variety of regulatory molecules to modulate expression of virulence factors. One important regulatory element of microorganisms is small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs), which control various cell functions such as expression of cell membrane proteins, mRNA decay and riboswitches. 4. 4. Synthesis and functionalization of ring-fused 2-pyridones : Targeting pili formation in E. coli

    Författare :Nils Pemberton; Fredrik Almqvist; Oliver Kappe; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 2-pyridone; acylketene; antibacterial; biofilm inhibitor; Mannich; Micro-wave-assisted chemistry; peptidomimetic; virulence.; Organic synthesis; Organisk syntes;

    Sammanfattning : Bicyclic dihydrothiazolo fused 2-pyridones have been studied as a new class of antibacterial agents, termed pilicides, that target the formation of adhesive bacterial surface organelles (pili) in pathogenic bacteria. Synthetic methods to further functionalize the bicyclic 2-pyridone scaffold have been developed in order to increase water-solubility and thereby facilitate biological evalua-tions. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Pilicides and Curlicides : Design, synthesis, and evaluation of novel antibacterial agents targeting bacterial virulence

    Sammanfattning : New strategies are needed to counter the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. One such strategy is to design compounds that target bacterial virulence, which could work separately or in concert with conventional bacteriostatic or bactericidal antibiotics. LÄS MER
