6. Microglial Glutamate Transporters - Regulation of Expression and Possible Physiological Functions
Sammanfattning : Microglia are considered as the immunocompetent cells of the central nervous system (CNS). Being the first line of defence, they have prominent roles in monitoring the homeostasis and the extracellular milieu and can rapidly and specifically react to any disturbances such as brain trauma, ischemia, neurodegenerative diseases, or infections. 7. Glutathione in the brain. Studies on efflux and possible implications in neurotoxicity
Sammanfattning : Neuronal cell death in acute insults such as stroke, trauma and epilepsy involves overactivation of glutamate receptors, calcium influx and increased formation of potentially toxic reactive oxygen species. Glutathione is a key component in the antioxidant defense system against reactive oxygen species. LÄS MER
8. Dysfunction in the nigrostriatal system : effects of L-DOPA and GDNF
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder caused by nigrostriatal dopamine loss, with motor deficiencies as the primary outcome. To increase the striatal dopamine content, patients are treated with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-l-alanine (l-DOPA). LÄS MER
9. Involvement of non-dopaminergic systems in L-DOPA-induced dyskinsia
Sammanfattning : Parkinson's disease and L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia (LID) does not merely involve the dopamine (DA) system but also include non-dopaminergic systems such as glutamate and serotonin (5-HT). An aberrant glutamate transmission at the corticostriatal synapse, has been linked to LID. LÄS MER
10. Anti-epileptic and neuroprotective mechanisms by Topiramate and Levetiracetam evaluated in primary cultures
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate plausible intracellular mechanisms of action for antiepileptic drugs, Topiramate (TPM) and Levetiracetam (LEV), and to investigate if TPM possesses neuroprotective properties. The thesis is based on results from calcium imaging, immunohistochemical stainings, viability tests, and Western blot using primary cortical or hippocampal cultures, or hippocampal brain slices.
