  1. 26. Trophic factors, neuroprotection and spinal cord repair

    Författare :Johan Widenfalk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :spinal cord injury; GDNF; GFRalpha; neurotrophin; VEGF; olfactory ensheathing glia; weight-drop injury; in situ hybridization;

    Sammanfattning : Background: There is no cure for paralysis. The only drug therapy presently in use, acute high-dose methylprednisolone, has only modest effects on outcome. There is therefore a great need for new therapies. LÄS MER

  2. 27. Spinal cord repair strategies

    Författare :Henrich Cheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Spinal cord; injury; paraplegia; repair; regeneration; nerve graft; fibrin glue; aFGF; GDNF; gait; axonal tracing Henrich Cheng; 1996;

    Sammanfattning : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. LÄS MER

  3. 28. On the actions of neurotrophic factors on the chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla

    Författare :Petter Förander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neural crest; chromaffin cells; neurotrophic factors; NGF; NT-3; NT4; CNTF; GDNF; TGFß; FGF2; glucocorticoids; Intra oculartransplantation ; primary cultures; neurite outgrowth;

    Sammanfattning : Chromaffin cells producing adrenaline or noradrenaline are the predominant cell type in the adrenal medulla, but ganglion cells and Schwann cells are also present. All cells of the adrenal medulla are derived from the neural crest, which is a transient neuroectoderm-derived embryonic structure. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Författare :Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; stereology; rat; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; BrdU; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; subventricular zone; striatum; dentate gyrus; neuronal replacement; neuronal survival; Focal cerebral ischemia; glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 5. 30. Tetrodotoxin-resistant sodium channels in neuropathic pain

    Författare :Jenny Fjell Hjelmström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :spinal sensory neurons; nociceptor; IB4; tetrodotoxin; sodium channels; SNS PN3; NaN SNS2; gene regulation; NGF; GDNF; in situ hybridization; immunofluorescence; sodium currents; neuropathic pain models; Taiep;

    Sammanfattning : Injury to the peripheral nervous system can cause neuropathic pain. Abnormal sodium channel activity has been implicated as a source of ectopic firing and changes in nociceptive threshold following nerve injury. LÄS MER
