  1. 1. Information processing in the Striatum : a computational study

    Författare :Johannes Hjorth; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Anders Lansner; Kim Blackwell; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; striatum; fast spiking interneuron; gap junctions; synchronisation; up-state detection; CaMKII; mathematical modelling; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The basal ganglia form an important structure centrally placed in the brain. They receive input from motor, associative and limbic areas, and produce output mainly to the thalamus and the brain stem. The basal ganglia have been implied in cognitive and motor functions. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Computer Modelling of Neuronal Interactions in the Striatum

    Författare :Johannes Hjorth; Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; Kevin Gurney; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; striatum; fast spiking interneurons; medium spiny projection neurons; gap junctions; interoperability; MUSIC; Computer science; Datavetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Large parts of the cortex and the thalamus project into the striatum,which serves as the input stage of the basal ganglia. Information isintegrated in the striatal neural network and then passed on, via themedium spiny (MS) projection neurons, to the output stages of thebasal ganglia. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Neuroprotection and neurogenesis after experimental stroke

    Författare :Andreas Arvidsson; Lund Neurologi; []

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, two potential endogenous mechanisms for neuronal survival and repair have been investigated in a rat model of stroke, middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO): signaling of the GDNF family of neurotrophic factors, and neurogenesis from endogenous progenitor cells. As determined by in situ hybridization for GDNF family ligand and receptor genes, MCAO caused widespread upregulation of both components of the functional GDNF receptor, c-Ret and GFRalpha1, indicating that GDNF may be a survival signal in stroke. 4. 4. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor in cerebral ischemia: a quantitative study on surviving and newly formed neurons

    Författare :Elin Gustafsson; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; cerebral ischemia; neuronal survival; neurogenesis; hippocampus; striatum; immunocytochemistry; stereology; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; Neurology;

    Sammanfattning : This study explores the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) for neuronal vulnerability and neurogenesis following cerebral ischemia in the rat. Cerebral ischemia results in selective neuronal cell loss in specific brain regions. We here demonstrate the rank order of vulnerability in two regions affected by global forebrain ischemia, i. 5. 5. GDNF gene delivery in an animal model of Parkinson's disease. Long-term effects on intact, injured and transplanted dopamine neurons using lentiviral gene transfer

    Författare :Biljana Georgievska; Neurobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurologi; Neurology; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology; transplantation; tyrosine hydroxylase; tetracycline; striatum; substantia nigra; sprouting; regulation; neuroprotection; lentivirus; gene therapy; GDNF; behavior; dopamine; neuropsychology;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson's disease is characterized by a progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, leading to a loss of dopamine in the target structure striatum and development of motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia, rigidity and tremor. New experimental treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease are aimed at either preventing the degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons, or at restoring dopamine in the striatum by fetal dopaminergic transplants.
