  1. 1. The circle of strength and power : Experiences of empowerment in intensive care

    Författare :Ingrid Wåhlin; Ewa Idvall; Anna-Christina Ek; Britt-Marie Ternestedt; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Empowerment; Critical care; Experiences; Relationships; Work satisfaction; Patient; Family; Nurse; Physician; Comparison; Atmosphere; Quality of care; Interview; Intensive care; Intensivvård;

    Sammanfattning : Patients and next of kin in intensive care often experience powerlessness, anxiety and distress and intensive care staff are repeatedly exposed to traumatic situations and demanding events. Empowerment has been described as a process of overcoming a sense of powerlessness and a model through which people may develop a sense of inner strength through connections with others. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The epidemiology of risk factors and short- and long-term outcome in the Swedish intensive care cohort

    Författare :Björn Ahlström; Miklós Lipcsey; Ing-Marie Larsson; Gunnar Strandberg; Markus Skrifvars; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Intensive care; Intensive care unit; Sepsis; Covid-19; Epidemiology; Dementia; Mortality; Causes of death; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Sammanfattning : The sepsis syndrome is present in ¼ to ⅓ of patients in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. The short-term prognosis is grim, with a 30-day mortality of 30–35%; however, the long- term outcomes are now being explored, as multi-professional follow-up after ICU care is increasingly being implemented. 3. 3. Tactile touch in intensive care : Nurses' preparation, patients' experiences and the effect on stress parameters

    Författare :Maria Henricson; Bengt Fridlund; Kerstin Segesten; Anna-Lena Berglund; Sylvia Määttä; Karlstads universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Tactile touch; intensive care; stress; oxytocin; complementary method; nursing; preparation; randomised controlled trial; comfort; lifeworld research; narratives; Nursing; Omvårdnad; Nursing Science; Omvårdnad;

    Sammanfattning : Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to acquire knowledge about whether tactile touch as a complementary method can (i) promote comfort and (ii) reduce stress reactions during care in an intensive care unit (ICU) Method: In Paper I, five nurses with a touch therapist training were interviewed about their experiences of preparation before giving tactile touch in an ICU. To analyse the meaning of preparation as a phenomenon, Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological approach was used. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Microdialysis and Intensive Care. Clinical and experimental studies

    Författare :Per Ederoth; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anaesthesiology; traumatic brain injury; glucose; glycerol; lipolysis; epidural; postoperative analgesia; experimental pancreatitis; human; blood-brain barrier; morphine; pharmacokinetics; Microdialysis; intensive care; Anestesiologi; intensivvård;

    Sammanfattning : Microdialysis was used to monitor local concentrations of energy metabolites in different organs, and to study the pharmacokinetics of morphine over the blood-brain barrier in intact and injured brain tissue in conditions treated in the Intensive Care Unit. After major abdominal or thoracoabdominal surgery, postoperative thoracic epidural analgesia resulted in higher glycerol concentrations in the deltoid subcutaneous adipose tissue, implying increased lipolysis, on the third postoperative day as compared to intravenous infusion of morphine, possibly due to a locally increased sympathetic tone. 5. 5. Patient safety in the Intensive Care Unit : With special reference to Airway management and Nursing procedures

    Författare :Joakim Engström; Anders Larsson; Camilla Fröjd; Henrik Reinius; Peter Sackey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensive care unit; patient safety; nursing procedures; airway managment; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the present thesis was to study aspects of patient safety in critically ill patients with special focus on airway management, respiratory complications and nursing procedures. Study I describes a method called pharyngeal oxygen administration during intubation in an experimental acute lung injury model. LÄS MER
