  1. 11. Biogas generation in landfills : equilibria, rates & yields

    Författare :Mattias Åkesson; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; geographical and geological engineering; Hydrogeology; model; limitation; volatile fatty acids; kinetics; biogas; thermodynamics; methane; Landfill; test cell; Hydrogeologi; teknisk geologi; teknisk geografi; Geophysics; physical oceanography; meteorology; Geofysik; fysisk oceanografi; meteorologi;

    Sammanfattning : Landfilling in "cells" has become more common in recent years. Different waste streams are guided to different cells, among which the biocell is a landfill designed for biogas production. In this thesis, the dependence of biogas generation on waste composition was investigated. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Hydrological modeling as a tool for sustainable water resources management: a case study of the Awash River Basin

    Författare :Selome M. Tessema; Berit Balfors; Ulla Mörtberg; Shimelis Gebriye Setegn; Steve W. Lyon; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Hydrological characteristics; Distributed hydrological modeling; Rainfall-runoff correlation; Streamflow prediction; Sustainable water management; Awash River Basin; Hydrology; Hydrologi;

    Sammanfattning : The growing pressure on the world‘s fresh water resources is enforced by population growth that leads to conflicts between demands for different purposes. A main concern on water use is the conflict between the environment and other purposes like hydropower, irrigation for agriculture and domestic and industry water supply, where total flows are diverted without releasing water for ecological conservation. 3. 13. Unravelling Sustainability : The complex dynamics of emergent environmental governance and management systems at multiple scales

    Författare :Lucas Dawson; Ingrid Stjernquist; Marine Elbakidze; Raimonds Ernsteins; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Integrated adaptive environmental governance and management; Social-ecological system dynamics; Complex systems; Sustainability transitions; Sustainability strategies; Multi-level governance; Causal loop diagrams; Green Infrastructure; Landscape restoration; Habitat restoration; Biodiversity conservation; Comprehensive planning; Stakeholder participation; System thinking; Water Framework Directive; Sustainable water governance; Collaborative learning; Communities of practice; Knowledge management; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis adopts a complex systems approach to investigate the dynamic emergence of sustainable environmental governance and management systems in multiple contexts in Europe. Accelerating rates of environmental degradation across the world have called the legitimacy of previous environmental governance and management arrangements into question. LÄS MER

  4. 14. PV water pumping systems for grassland and farmland conservation

    Författare :Pietro Elia Campana; Jinyue Yan; Bengt Perers; Mälardalens högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Energy- and Environmental Engineering; energi- och miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Grassland degradation is considered as one of the worst environmental and economic problems in China because of the negative impacts on water and food security. The application of the photovoltaic water pumping (PVWP) technology for irrigation is an innovative and sustainable solution to curb the progress of grassland desertification and to promote the conservation of farmland in remote areas. 5. 15. Essays on Soil Conservation, Social Capital and Technology Adoption

    Författare :Wilfred Nyangena; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Kenya; social capital; soil and water conservation; technology adoption; farm productivity;

    Sammanfattning : Erosion of agricultural land remains a major constraint to agricultural development in Kenya, which has a complex topography. Government and donor institutions are promoting soil and water conservation practices. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the process and driving forces for the adoption of these practices. LÄS MER
