16. "Skeendet på stället" : Röster och samtidigheter i tre verk av Sara Lidman
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines how cultural encounters and asymmetrical power relationships are depicted in three works by Sara Lidman (1923–2004): Hjortronlandet (“Cloudberry Land”) from 1955, Med fem diamanter (“With Five Diamonds”) from 1964 and Samtal i Hanoi (“Conversations in Hanoi”) from 1966. They are set in three very different colonial contexts, northern Sweden in the early 20th century, Kenya in the early 1960’s and Vietnam in 1965, and take place in a time of transition when an agricultural, local way of life is challenged by a Eurocentric understanding of modernity and knowledge. 17. Mobilization of metals from mining wastes and the resuspension of contaminated sediments
Sammanfattning : In some environmental situations, environmental effects caused by elevated metals resulting from past mining and smelting activities can be observed in nearby receiving water bodies several decades after mine and smelter closure. There is a growing need for managing the hazardous solid wastes such as mining wastes as well as for assessing water quality and for sustainable management of sediment quality. LÄS MER
18. Genetics, breeding and deployment of Melaleuca and Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : Additive effects of genes are cumulative over generations and are the main source of genetic variation exploited by most plant breeding programs. However, the relative importance of additive and non-additive genetic effects is critical information required to properly evaluate the potential for genetic gain from various breeding programs and deployment options used in the genetic improvement of forest trees. 19. Kind of turquoise : Effects of seafood eco-certification and sustainable consumption
Sammanfattning : Aquaculture and fisheries hold promise for supplying a growing world population with healthy food produced without undermining the earth’s carrying capacity. However, just as livestock production and agriculture, seafood production can have negative environmental impacts and if a continuous or even increased supply is to be guaranteed, the pressure on affected ecosystems needs to be limited. 20. Urinary tract infections in pregnancy : studies in vivo and in vitro
Sammanfattning : The risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) in pregnant women is increased and predisposes them to acute pyelonephritis together with poor pregnancy outcomes. Increased frequency of micturition, nocturia and lower abdominal discomfort are common non-specific complaints during pregnancy, which render clinical diagnosis of UTI inaccurate. LÄS MER
