  1. 6. Antimicrobial peptides and virulence factors in meningococcal colonisation and disease

    Författare :Miriam Geörg; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Ole E. Sørensen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neisseria meningitidis; antimicrobial peptide; LL-37; cell-penetrating peptide; resistance; polynucleotide phosphorylase; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : The Gram-negative bacterium Neisseria meningitidis is a transient commensal of the human nasopharynx, but occasionally causes life-threatening disease. During colonisation of its niche, N. meningitidis has to overcome innate immune defences, including the expression of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). LÄS MER

  2. 7. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms

    Författare :Lillemor Melander Skattum; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; C3 nephritic factors; GM allotypes; C1q autoantibodies; serum bactericidal activity; Neisseria meningitidis; idiopathic sudden hearing loss; complement; Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis;

    Sammanfattning : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). LÄS MER

  3. 8. Complement-dependent defence against bacterial infection. Studies in C2 deficiency

    Författare :Barbro Selander; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antibody responses; polysaccharide antigens; vaccination; mannan-binding lectin MBL ; complement; C2 deficiency; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Sammanfattning : The complement system is critically involved in defence against bacterial infection. C2 deficiency is, apart from mannan-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency, the most common homozygous complement deficiency among Caucasians. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Characterisation of Neisseria meningitidis from a virulence and immunogenic perspective that includes variations in novel vaccine antigens

    Författare :Susanne Jacobsson; Hans Fredlund; Per Olcén; Paula Mölling; Elisabeth Wedege; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Neisseria meningitidis; meningococcal disease; risk factors; vaccine; genome-derived neisserial antigens GNA ; polymerase chain reaction PCR ; sequencing; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicin; Medicine; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Sammanfattning : Neisseria meningitidis, also referred to as meningococcus, is a Gram-negative diplococcal bacterium best known as an important cause of meningitis and septicaemia worldwide. Meningococcal disease is a rare but life-threatening illness that may progress to death despite optimal medical care including appropriate antibiotic therapy. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Primary immunodeficiency in southern Sweden. Strategies for diagnosis and clinical management

    Författare :Nicholas Brodszki; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Immune system; Lymphocytes; T-cell; B-cell; Antibodies; Complement system; Epidemiological study; Primary immunodeficiency; Severe combined immunodeficiency; Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this PhD project was to gain insight into the incidence of primary immunodeficiency (PID) in southern Sweden and to optimize diagnostic and treatment measures for these patients. We estimated the occurrence rate of PID in the pediatric population of southern Sweden during a period of 4 years and described the demographic, clinical and immunological characteristics of the identified cases.
