  1. 16. Neuronal tracers for fine caliber spinal primary afferents and their response to peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :H Fredrik Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Rat; Primary afferents; Dorsal root ganglion; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord; Isolectin GSA I-B4; Soybean agglutinin; Cholera toxin B subunit; Horseradish peroxidase; Immunohistochemistry; Neuronal tracing;

    Sammanfattning : The isolectin B4 from Griffonia simplicifolia I (B4) and soybean agglutinin from the plant Glycine max (SBA), have been shown to bind to rat small-diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, and to fibers and presumed terminals in laminae I-II of the spinal cord dorsal horn. In the present thesis, these lectins and/or their horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugates, have been investigated in the rat with regard to their usefulness as selective neuronal markers of and axonally transported tracers for somatic and/or visceral spinal primary afferents with fine caliber, including unmyelinated, axons. 2. 17. Expression and regulation of neuronal messenger molecules : focus on the NO-cGMP pathway and galanin in autonomic and sensory neurons

    Författare :Kristina Holmberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adrenal gland; autonomic ganglia; cGMP; dorsal root ganglion; galanin; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; nerve growth factor; neuropeptides; nitric oxide synthase; sodium nitroprusside; transgenic mice;

    Sammanfattning : The autonomic nervous system consists of the sympathetic, parasympathetic and enteric divisions. The sympathetic pre- and paravertebral neurons are in principle of noradrenergic phenotype. However, originally pharmacological experiments indicated that sympathetic fibers projecting to the sweat glands are cholinergic. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Changes in sensory systems during aging : an experimental study in the rat

    Författare :Esbjörn Bergman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aging; behavior; primary sensory neuron; dorsal root ganglion; mystacial pad; sensory nerve ending; axon dystrophy; neuropeptides; B4; RT97; CTB; neurotrophins; trk; p75NTR; GFR[alpha]; RET; protein; mRNA;

    Sammanfattning : Aging is associated with sensorimotor disturbances, including increased proprioceptive thresholds. The present study aimed to clarify the occurrence of structural and biochemical alterations in sensory systems of behaviorally characterized aged rats. LÄS MER

  4. 19. The effects of neurotrophic substances on primary sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :Petri Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :DRG; dorsal horn; NGF; BDNF; NT-3; substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase; carbonic anhydrase; microglia; astroglia;

    Sammanfattning : Sensory impulses from the periphery is transmitted by primary sensory neurons located in dorsal root and cranial nerve ganglia. The primary sensory neurons are phenotypically diverse with regard to their expression of various chemical components. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Regulation of neurotrophic signaling molecules in motor neurons, primary sensory neurons and target tissues in senescence

    Författare :Yu Ming; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Aging; dorsal root ganglion; spinal cord; muscle; neurotrophins; GFRalpha; Ret; FGF-2; gp 130; CNTF; LIF; IL-6; receptors; protein; mRNA; glia; axon dystrophy; demyelination.;

    Sammanfattning : A hallmark of senescence is sensorimotor impairment, characterized by gait disturbance, deficits in postural control, and muscle weakness. The object of this thesis work was to elucidate some of the molecular basis underlying these disturbances, mainly referring to the occurrence of characteristic changes in gene-expression pattern, especially, alterations in trophic signaling associated with the phenotypic changes seen in motoneurons as well as primary sensory neurons and target muscles during aging.
