  1. 1. Regulation of neurotrophic signaling molecules in motor neurons, primary sensory neurons and target tissues in senescence

    Författare :Yu Ming; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Aging; dorsal root ganglion; spinal cord; muscle; neurotrophins; GFRalpha; Ret; FGF-2; gp 130; CNTF; LIF; IL-6; receptors; protein; mRNA; glia; axon dystrophy; demyelination.;

    Sammanfattning : A hallmark of senescence is sensorimotor impairment, characterized by gait disturbance, deficits in postural control, and muscle weakness. The object of this thesis work was to elucidate some of the molecular basis underlying these disturbances, mainly referring to the occurrence of characteristic changes in gene-expression pattern, especially, alterations in trophic signaling associated with the phenotypic changes seen in motoneurons as well as primary sensory neurons and target muscles during aging. 2. 2. Changes in sensory systems during aging : an experimental study in the rat

    Författare :Esbjörn Bergman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aging; behavior; primary sensory neuron; dorsal root ganglion; mystacial pad; sensory nerve ending; axon dystrophy; neuropeptides; B4; RT97; CTB; neurotrophins; trk; p75NTR; GFR[alpha]; RET; protein; mRNA;

    Sammanfattning : Aging is associated with sensorimotor disturbances, including increased proprioceptive thresholds. The present study aimed to clarify the occurrence of structural and biochemical alterations in sensory systems of behaviorally characterized aged rats. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Spinal motoneurones and the bulbospinal serotonininergic system in aged rats with behavioral deficits

    Författare :Hans Johnson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aging; behavior; immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridisation; motoneuron; CGRP; axotorny; GAP-43; neurotrophin receptors; degeneration; axon dystrophy; 5HT TRH; SP; 5HLkA; AADC; serotonintransporter protein; fluoxetine; L-5-HTP;

    Sammanfattning : The expression of neuropeptides, growth-related proteins and neurotrophin receptors were studied in motoneurons of young adult rats and in aged rats with symptoms of neuromuscular incapacities. Also studied were aging-related changes in the descending serotoninergic (5HT) bulbospinal system which constitutes a major afferent pathway to spinal motoneurons. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On laminins and laminin receptors and their roles in regeneration and myelination of the peripheral nerve

    Författare :Wilhelm Wallquist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Motoneuron; dorsal root ganglion neuron; integrin; laminin; Schwann cell; Sciatic nerve; regeneration; myelination; in situ hybridization; immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.;

    Sammanfattning : One important prerequisite for successful axon regeneration is that appropriate extracellular molecules are available for outgrowing axons and that receptors for such molecules are found in the regenerating neuron. Laminin associated integrin subunits alpha3, alpha6, alpha7 and beta1 mRNAs are here shown to be present in rat motoneurons, and in the case of integrin subunits alpha7 and gamma1, also immunohistochemical (IHC) labelling of the proteins was demonstrated. 5. 5. Cell-matrix interactions in neuronal regeneration : focus on integrins and laminins

    Författare :Stefan Plantman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The central and peripheral nervous system (CNS and PNS, respectively) differ in their ability to regenerate after injury. This difference has been attributed both to intrinsic differences in the properties of the neurons and to the extracellular environment. LÄS MER
