1. Cerebral white matter changes in patients with cognitive impairment - clinical and pathophysiological aspects
Sammanfattning : Cerebral white matter changes (WMC), detected with computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), represent a common condition in elderly people. However, the prognostic, symptomatological and biochemical constituents of WMC are only partially known. LÄS MER
2. Regulation of neurotrophic signaling molecules in motor neurons, primary sensory neurons and target tissues in senescence
Sammanfattning : A hallmark of senescence is sensorimotor impairment, characterized by gait disturbance, deficits in postural control, and muscle weakness. The object of this thesis work was to elucidate some of the molecular basis underlying these disturbances, mainly referring to the occurrence of characteristic changes in gene-expression pattern, especially, alterations in trophic signaling associated with the phenotypic changes seen in motoneurons as well as primary sensory neurons and target muscles during aging. 3. Genetic regulation of, and autoimmunity in, myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) with inflammation and plaques of demyelination. This thesis examines the genetic and immunological requirements or rat experiment autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS, to display both inflammatory and demyelinated CNS lesions with chronic and/or relapsing-remitting disease courses. 4. Deciphering and fine-tuning of myeloid cells in CNS demyelinating conditions
Sammanfattning : Demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS) is a characteristic of various neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica (NMO), subacute combined degeneration (SCD), tabes dorsalis (syphilitic myelopathy), and more. Although the causes vary, CNS demyelination is often associated with a significant buildup of inflammatory activated myeloid cells, mainly consisting of CNS resident microglia and infiltrating monocyte-derived macrophages. 5. MRI quantification of multiple sclerosis pathology
Sammanfattning : Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disease and a common cause of neurologic disability. MS pathology is characterized by demyelination, neuroaxonal loss and atrophy. LÄS MER
