1. Carbide and MAX-Phase Engineering by Thin Film Synthesis
Sammanfattning : This thesis reports on the development of low-temperature processes for transition metal carbide and MAX-phase thin film growth. Magnetron sputtering and evaporation, far from thermodynamical equilibrium, have been utilised to engineer the properties of the films by physical and chemical control. LÄS MER
2. Phase transitions in novel superfluids and systems with correlated disorder
Sammanfattning : Condensed matter systems undergoing phase transitions rarely allow exact solutions. The presence of disorder renders the situation even worse but collective Monte Carlo methods and parallel algorithms allow numerical descriptions. LÄS MER
3. Genome mapping of the horse
Sammanfattning : Our ability to map and sequence whole genomes is one of the most important developments in biological science. It will provide us with an unprecedented insight into the genetic background of phenotypic traits, such as disease resistance, reproduction and growth and also makes it feasible to study the processes of genome evolution. 4. Nuclear magnetic resonance and microcirculation: The influence of pulsatile brain-tissue motion on measurements of intravoxel incoherent motion and assessment of haemodynamics using exo- and endogenous tracers
Sammanfattning : In this project, the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy in studies of microcirculation and haemodynamics was evaluated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of human pulsatile brain-tissue movements in healthy individuals, relevant for the understanding of the cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) circulation and the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus, were thoroughly investigated. 5. High Temperature Superconducting and Tunable Ferroelectric Microwave Devices
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses some applications of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) and ferroelectric materials in tunable microwave devices and circuits. The work is divided into three main areas: i) modeling of multilayered structures including ferroelectric layers, ii) realization and characterization of tunable coplanar waveguides (CPW), capacitors and resonators based on ferroelectrics, and iii) an investigation of microstrip HTS K-band filters.
