1. Affective touch throughout life: from cortical processing in infancy to touch perception in adulthood
Sammanfattning : Affective, interpersonal touch is important for forming and maintaining social bonds. In the hairy skin of humans there is a specific type of nerve fibers called C-tactile (CT) afferents which are optimally activated by a light stroking of the skin, like a caress. LÄS MER
2. Variations in Functional Lateralization
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this thesis was to study asymmetric activation of the neocortex in normal subjects, using the rCBF technique and different cognitive tasks. The aim was also to study individual and group variations of asymmetric activation, as well as factors pertaining to these variations. The thesis is based on four investigations. LÄS MER
3. Nuclear magnetic resonance and microcirculation: The influence of pulsatile brain-tissue motion on measurements of intravoxel incoherent motion and assessment of haemodynamics using exo- and endogenous tracers
Sammanfattning : In this project, the potential of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and spectroscopy in studies of microcirculation and haemodynamics was evaluated. The spatial and temporal characteristics of human pulsatile brain-tissue movements in healthy individuals, relevant for the understanding of the cerebrospinal-fluid (CSF) circulation and the pathogenesis of hydrocephalus, were thoroughly investigated. 4. The search for reversibility of Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus : Aspects on intracranial pressure measurments and CSF volume alteration
Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND: Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is still a syndrome generating more questions than answers. Today, research focuses mainly on two areas: understanding the pathophysiology – especially how the malfunctioning CSF system affects the brain parenchyma – and finding better methods to select patients benefiting from a shunt operation. 5. Brain functional near infrared spectroscopy in human infants : cerebral cortical haemodynamics coupled to neuronal activation in response to sensory stimulation
Sammanfattning : The assessment of cortical activation in the neonatal brain is crucial in the study of brain development, as it provides precious information for how the newborn infant processes external or internal stimuli. Thus far functional studies of neonates aimed to assess cortical responses to certain external stimuli are very few, due to the lack of suitable techniques to monitor brain activity of the newborn.
