1. Antiadhesive agents targeting uropathogenic Escherichia coli : Multivariate studies of protein-protein and protein-carbohydrate interactions
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes studies directed towards development of novel antiadhesive agents, with particular emphasis on compounds that prevent attachment of bacteria to a host-cell. Three different proteins involved in the assembly or function of adhesive pili in uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been targeted either by rational structure based design or statistical molecular methods. 2. Hemicelluloses and other Polysaccharides for Wood Adhesive Applications
Sammanfattning : The growing environmental awareness has led to an increased interest in bio-based polymers as replacement for fossil-based materials. The purpose of the work described in this thesis was to investigate the possibility of using hemicelluloses and other polysaccharides as replacement for fossil-based polymers in wood adhesives. 3. Endothelial cell interactions with neutrophils : studies of adhesion and effects of lipoxygenase metabolites and antirheumatic drugs
Sammanfattning : Inflammation is a process of vital importance in the defence and elimination of microorganisms as well as in the repair of the damaged tissue. However, inadequate or excessive inflammation leads to inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. LÄS MER
4. Abdominal adhesions - clinical impact and experimental prevention
Sammanfattning : Intraabdominal adhesions are formed after most operations and a limited number of studies have to examine the long-term spectrum of adhesion-related disorders and the cost associated with this. Only a few numbers of antiadhesive agents are available which, however, do not decrease the actual morbidity that follows intraabdominal adhesions, such as small bowel obstruction, infertility and pain. 5. Synthesis and functionalization of ring-fused 2-pyridones : Targeting pili formation in E. coli
Sammanfattning : Bicyclic dihydrothiazolo fused 2-pyridones have been studied as a new class of antibacterial agents, termed pilicides, that target the formation of adhesive bacterial surface organelles (pili) in pathogenic bacteria. Synthetic methods to further functionalize the bicyclic 2-pyridone scaffold have been developed in order to increase water-solubility and thereby facilitate biological evalua-tions. LÄS MER
