1. Phospholipase A2 in nerve injury and axonal outgrowth
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with processes coupled to injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), with a general aim to investigate the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes in axonal outgrowth. The axonal outgrowth of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro was reduced by several different inhibitors of PLA2 activity and enhanced by an activator of this enzyme. LÄS MER
2. Functional characterisation of receptors for cysteinyl leukotrienes in smooth muscle
Sammanfattning : The cysteinyl leukotrienes (leukotriene C4, D4 and E4) have potent biological actions which significantly contribute to the airway obstruction in asthma. Several of these effects are blocked by drugs known as CysLT1-receptor antagonists, which have been introduced as new treatment for asthma. LÄS MER
3. Biosynthesis and biological role of leukotrienes in B lymphocytes
Sammanfattning : Leukotrienes (LT) are potent lipid mediators, synthesized from arachidonic acid (AA) upon cell activation. The essential enzyme for leukotriene biosynthesis is 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), converting AA, through a two step process to LTA4. The activity of 5-LO is dependent on 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP). LÄS MER
4. Leukotrienes and leukotriene receptors : potential roles in cardiovascular diseases
Sammanfattning : Leukotrienes (LTs) are a family of lipid mediators that are involved in host defense and inflammatory responses. They are synthesized from arachidonic acid through the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway, and are divided into two classes, the classical chemoattractant leukotriene B4 (LTB4), and spasmogenic cysteinyl leukotrienes (cys-Us) including LTC4, LTD4 and LTE4. 5. Biosynthesis and biological role of leukotrienes in human lymphocytes
Sammanfattning : Leukotrienes (LT) are biologically active metabolites of arachidonic acid. The key enzyme in leukotriene biosynthesis is 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO). Leukotriene B4 exerts its biological effect mainly via BLT1, the high affinity receptor for LTB4. Leukotriene B4 is a potent proinflammatory and chemotactic mediator. LÄS MER
