6. Regulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase - Consequences in experimental models of bladder disease
Sammanfattning : Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression is associated with various pathophysiological conditions in the lower urinary tract. The aims of this thesis have been to investigate the regulation of iNOS in bladder smooth muscle cells and the consequences on neuromuscular regulation, cell growth and differentiation. LÄS MER
7. Nitric oxide in central nervous structures associated with water balance and micturition
Sammanfattning : The role of nitric oxide (NO) in the central control of water balance and micturition has not yet been established. In the present thesis, where female rats were used, neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) distribution was studied in structures of the central nervous system known to be associated with the above mentioned control. 8. Pulmonary Hypertension and the Nitric Oxide System
Sammanfattning : Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a pathophysiological state associated with several medical conditions, leading to progressive rise in pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and right ventricular failure. The clinical PH classification encompasses five main World Health Organization (WHO) groups; pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), PH due to left heart disease, PH due to lung diseases and/or hypoxia, chronic thromboembolic PH, and PH with unclear multifactorial mechanisms. 9. Nitric oxide donors in labor management
Sammanfattning : ABSTRACT Nitric oxide donors in labor management Maria Bullarbo Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Institute of Clinical Sciences Background: Nitric oxide (NO), a free radical with ultra-short half-life synthesized from L- arginine by the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS), is in the human involved in many physiological and pathophysiological processes, including different reproductive processes. During pregnancy NO is produced endogenously in the human uterine cervix and placenta. LÄS MER
10. Nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO): A novel class of messenger molecules regulating insulin and glucagon secretion
Sammanfattning : During the last decade it has been shown that nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) are produced in our own body, and that they constitute a novel class of messenger molecules. In 1992 a constitutive NO-producing NO-synthase (cNOS) was found in the islets of Langerhans, and in 1997 we could show for the first time that the islets also contained a CO-producing constitutive heme oxygenase (HO-2).
