  1. 21. Pathophysiology of blood-brain barrier, brain edema and cell injury following hyperthermia : New role of heat shock protein, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide : an experimental study in rat using light and electron microscopy

    Författare :Hari Shanker Sharma; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; blood-brain barrier; heat stress; hyperthermia; brain edema; serotonin; nitric oxide; carbon monoxide; heat shock protein; glial fibrillary acidic protein; myelin basic protein; opioids; histamine; catecholamines; naloxone; indomethacin; p-CPA; electron microscopy; immunocytochemistry; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Human Anatomy; anatomi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the molecular mechanisms of hyperthermia induced brain damage in rats. The results clearly establish that hyperthermia caused by 4 h heat stress at 38° C is associated with a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability which seems to be instrumental in causing brain edema and cell injury. 2. 22. Nitric Oxide Synthase in Pancreatic Islets During Trauma and Parenteral Feeding

    Författare :Saleem Qader; Islet cell physiology; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; orthopaedics; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; Gastroenterologi; Gastro-enterology; Pancreatitis; Ghrelin; TPN; cNOS; iNOS; PACAP; VIP; cAMP; Pancreatic islets; Insulin secretion;

    Sammanfattning : The influence of trauma (acute pancreatitis) or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) on pancreatic islet hormone secretion in relation to islet expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was investigated. Acute pancreatitis resulted in an impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) which was found to be parallelled by a marked expression of iNOS and an exaggerated NO production in the pancreatic islets. 3. 23. On the role of nitric oxide in uterine secretion

    Författare :Birgitta Mörlin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Autonomic nerves; endometrial and cervical secretion; nitric oxide; guineapig.;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Uterine secretion is important in many different aspects of reproduction e.g. sperm transport and survival, fertilization, nourishment of the ovum and implantation. A cholinergic autonomic nervous secretory innervation has been established and modulation of the secretion by prostaglandins and NSAID drugs has been postulated. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Airborne nitric oxide : inflammatory marker and aerocrine messenger in man

    Författare :Jon Lundberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :ARDS; asthma; cystic fibrosis; cystitis; exhaled air; inflammatory bowel disease; inhaled nitric oxide; Kartagener s syndrome; nitric oxide synthase; sinusitis; ;

    Sammanfattning : We have used a chemiluminescence technique to measure gaseous nitric oxide (NO) directly in hollow organs of humans. NO production was studied in the airways of healthy controls and patients with chronic inflammatory airway disease, in the stomach of healthy subjects, in the colon of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and in the urinary bladder of patients with cystitis. 5. 25. Nitric oxide : a surrogate marker of bowel inflammation

    Författare :Claudia I Reinders; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The gas nitric oxide (NO) is a pluripotent biological messenger involved in numerous physiological and pathological processes in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the intestinal mucosa NO is synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine via a reaction catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS). LÄS MER
