1. Revisiting dental caries as an immunodeficiency disorder
Sammanfattning : Worldwide, dental caries is the major human chronic disease, with billions of people affected in terms of life quality impairment and high society costs that consumes 5-10% of the global healthcare budget. In Western countries dental caries has declined dramatically, with a trajectory of 15% high-risk individuals with recurrent caries and a non-responder behavior to standard prevention. LÄS MER
2. Primary immunodeficiency in southern Sweden. Strategies for diagnosis and clinical management
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this PhD project was to gain insight into the incidence of primary immunodeficiency (PID) in southern Sweden and to optimize diagnostic and treatment measures for these patients. We estimated the occurrence rate of PID in the pediatric population of southern Sweden during a period of 4 years and described the demographic, clinical and immunological characteristics of the identified cases. 3. Genetics of primary immunodeficiency diseases
Sammanfattning : Selective IgA deficiency (IgAD) (serum IgA concentration of T), which abolished expression of the TACI molecule. In addition, we found the previously recognized C104R and C172Y mutations in a heterozygous form in 2 patients with CVID and one, novel, heterozygous P42T mutation. LÄS MER
4. Models for infections in immunodeficiency
Sammanfattning : Increased susceptibility to infections in immunodeficient patients is a well-known phenomenon. The spectrum of infections reflects the underlying defect. Experimental infections in mouse strains with different types of defined immunodeficiencies allow studying the course of infectious diseases in immunocompromised hosts. LÄS MER
5. Infectious and bleeding complications in patients with hematological malignancies : Studies on diagnosis and prevention
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis is to improve knowledge about the prevention of infectious and bleeding complications in patients with hematological malignancies, primarily in those with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and myelodysplatic syndrome (MDS).Hypogammaglobulinemia, impaired production of immunoglobulins (Ig), is an established risk factor for infection, but the impact of IgG pure subclass deficiency (IgG subclass deficiency with adequate production of IgG, IgA, and IgM) has been debated.
