21. Neuroactive steroids and rat CNS
Sammanfattning : Several studies suggest profound effects on mood and cognition by neuroactive steroids. Estrogen alone or in combination with antidepressant drugs affecting the serotonin system has been used to treat mood disorders. On the other hand, progesterone is related to negative effects on mood and memory. LÄS MER
22. Neurotransmission and functional synaptic plasticity in the rat medial preoptic nucleus
Sammanfattning : Brain function implies complex information processing in neuronal circuits, critically dependent on the molecular machinery that enables signal transmission across synaptic contacts between neurons. The types of ion channels and receptors in the neuronal membranes vary with neuron types and brain regions and determine whether neuronal responses will be excitatory or inhibitory and often allow for functional synaptic plasticity which is thought to be the basis for much of the adaptability of the nervous system and for our ability to learn and store memories. 23. Allopregnanolone and mood : studies of postmenopausal women during treatment with progesterone
Sammanfattning : Introduction. Allopregnanolone and pregnanolone (neuroactive metabolites of progesterone) act as positive modulators of the GABAA receptor system which is the major inhibitory system in CNS. Contradictory results on the effect of GABAA receptor modulators are reported. LÄS MER
24. Taste Hedonics and the Intake of Alcohol and Food
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes four papers based on animal experimental work. They analyze the way in which activation of a specific motivational state - hunger- modulates the rewarding actions of alcohol and taste palatability. LÄS MER
25. Nicotine sensitization and the effects of extended withdrawal - behavioral, neurochemical and electrophysiological studies in the rat
Sammanfattning : Tobacco use is one of the primary factors for global burden of disease and often results in life-long nicotine addiction, only a small percentage users are able to maintain cessation. The life-long addiction together with a high relapse risk might be connected to drug-induced altered neural circuits. LÄS MER
