1. Neurotransmission and functional synaptic plasticity in the rat medial preoptic nucleus
Sammanfattning : Brain function implies complex information processing in neuronal circuits, critically dependent on the molecular machinery that enables signal transmission across synaptic contacts between neurons. The types of ion channels and receptors in the neuronal membranes vary with neuron types and brain regions and determine whether neuronal responses will be excitatory or inhibitory and often allow for functional synaptic plasticity which is thought to be the basis for much of the adaptability of the nervous system and for our ability to learn and store memories. 2. GABA-, glycine- and glutamate-induced currents in rat medial preoptic neurons : functional interactions and modulation by capsaicin
Sammanfattning : The medial preoptic nucleus (MPN) of the hypothalamus plays a major role in many functions involved in maintaining bodily homeostasis, such as thermoregulation and osmoregulation, as well as in the control of complex behaviours, e.g. sexual behaviour. LÄS MER
3. On Fever Mechanisms & Preoptic Signalling
Sammanfattning : Fever, a 1-4 °C elevation of the body temperature, is part of the systemic inflammatory response to infection or tissue damage, and it is believed to be a potent host defence. The underlying physiological mechanisms of the febrile response are one of the two main objectives in this thesis, where studies conducted in whole animals (rats and mice), chiefly aimed at clarifying the cytokine cascade in fever. 4. The electrophysiological response of medial preoptic neurons to hypoxia and development of a system for patch-clamp measurement with full oxygen control
Sammanfattning : A stroke is caused by interruption of the blood supply to the brain. Yearly 15 million people around the globe endure a stroke and the costs and suffering for the people involved and the society are immense. LÄS MER
5. Molecular mechanisms of nociception in the rat brain : anatomical connections and trans-synaptic regulation of gene expression of neurons in the pontine parabrachial nucleus
Sammanfattning : The pontine parabrachial nucleus (PB) is a major recipient of fibers fromnociceptive (pain-responsive) spinal and trigeminal dorsal horn neurons. With the use of combinations of molecular and morphological techniques, the anatomical connections of PB neurons and their expression of neuropeptide genes and transcription factors were studied, both in naive rats and in rats that had been subjected to nociceptive stimulation.
