1. Taste Hedonics and the Intake of Alcohol and Food
Sammanfattning : This thesis includes four papers based on animal experimental work. They analyze the way in which activation of a specific motivational state - hunger- modulates the rewarding actions of alcohol and taste palatability. LÄS MER
2. Studies of cytokine mediated regulation of central nervous functions : role of prostaglandins
Sammanfattning : The communication between the immune system and the central nervous system (CNS) results in an array of centrally regulated illness responses, including fever and increased hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. The mechanisms by which the immune system signals the brain across the blood-brain barrier have not been completely elucidated, but proinflammatory cytokines, like interleukin-1 (IL-1), are believed to act as important mediators. 3. Structure and expression of the TP and EP1 prostanoid receptor genes
Sammanfattning : Prostanoids are ubiquitously distributed lipid signaling molecules derived from arachidonic acid, that exhibit numerous and diverse biological effects in a variety of physiological and pathophysiological conditions. The cell surface receptors for the prostanoids belong to the family of G protein-coupled receptors. LÄS MER
4. IL-6 and GLP-1 in body fat regulating parts of the CNS in healthy mice
Sammanfattning : It has previously been shown that mice lacking interleukin-6 (IL-6) develop mature onset obesity. The weight-suppressing effects of IL-6 have been assumed to be exerted at a central level, as supported by the fact that ICV- injections, but not peripheral injections of IL-6, increases energy expenditure and decreases body fat in rodents. 5. Role of corticotropin-releasing factor, somatostatin and leptin in vagal nerve function and control of gastric emptying
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to study the effects of centrally acting CRF and leptin, and peripherally acting somatostatin on gastric emptying of glucose. Freely moving rats bearing chronic intragastric fistulas received intragastric infusions (1.0 ml/min) of glucose (12.5 % or 25 %) during 6-18 min. LÄS MER
