  1. 6. Social participation, social capital and socioeconomic differences in health-related behaviours. An epidemiological study

    Författare :Martin Lindström; Socialmedicin och hälsopolitik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fat intake; health-related behaviour; intermittent smoking; multilevel analysis; neighbourhood; physical activity; psychosocial; smoking cessation; social capital; social participation; vegetable consumption; socioeconomic differences;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether psychosocial resources explain socioeconomic differences in smoking cessation and its maintenance. METHODS: A subpopulation of 11,837 individuals from the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study interviewed in 1992-94, age range 45-64 years, was investigated in this cross-sectional study. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Effects of Antioxidants and Pro-oxidants on Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage using the Comet Assay : Studies on Blood Cells from Type 2 Diabetes Subjects and Mouse Lymphoma Cells

    Författare :Rikard Åsgård; Björn Hellman; Leif Busk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolic syndrome; fruit and vegetable intake; plasma antioxidants; beta-carotene; alpha-tocopherol; inflammation; oxidative DNA damage; lipid peroxidation; mouse lymphoma assay; ROS; nucleotide pool; viability; DNA dye; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Sammanfattning : Diet and oral supplements comprise two distinct sources of antioxidants known to prevent oxidative stress. Beneficial effects from antioxidants have been seen for patients at risk for type 2 diabetes.The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the positive effects of antioxidants against oxidative stress and DNA damage in type 2 diabetes subjects. 3. 8. Dietary prevention of gastrointestinal cancer : epidemiologic studies of fruit, vegetables and cereals

    Författare :Paul Terry; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :fruit; vegetables; antioxidants; cereals; dietary fiber; esophageal neoplasms; gastric cardia neoplasms; stomach neoplasms; colorectal neoplasms; gastroesophageal reflux; cohort studies; case-control studies;

    Sammanfattning : The widely accepted inverse associations between fruit, vegetables, dietary fiber and colorectal cancer risk, have recently been called into question. In addition, dietary studies of certain cancers, such as adenocarcinomas of the esophagus and gastric cardia, and prospective cohort studies of stomach cancer, remain scarce. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Antioxidant Capacity in Fruit and Vegetables -Cultivar Variation - Storage Conditions - Human Antioxidant Status

    Författare :Jessica Nilsson; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; human plasma antioxidants; Brassica; strawberry; pea; cultivar; ABTS; FRAP; Total antioxidant capacity; TAC; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The health-promoting effects of fruits and vegetables have been extensively discussed during the past decade since epidemiologic studies have shown relations between increased intake of fruit and vegetables and decreased incidences of several chronic diseases. It has been suggested that antioxidants are a main contributors to the observed effects, for example by acting as scavengers of free radicals. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors : Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    Författare :Elisabet Rytter; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Anders Sjödin; Helmut Sies; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Sammanfattning : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings.
