  1. 26. Are gadolinium contrast media really less nephrotoxic than iodine agents in radiographic examinations? A comparison in relation to their ability to attenuate x-rays in a pig model

    Författare :Barbara Elmståhl; Malmö Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Angiography; Computed tomography; toxicity; Contrast media; Glomerular filtration; Gadolinium; Iodine; Kidney failure; Nephrotoxicity.; Medicin människa och djur ; radiology; Clinical physics; Medicine human and vertebrates ; tomography; medical instrumentation; Diagnostik; Diagnostics; medicinsk instrumentering; tomografi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Purpose: To confront the statement that gadolinium contrast media (Gd-CM) are less nephrotoxic than iodine contrast media (I-CM) when used in x-ray angiographic and computed tomographic (CT) examinations. Methods: I) For CT measurements (mean density in Hounsfield numbers) 20-mL syringes filled with I- and Gd-CM at 0.01, 0.02, 0. LÄS MER

  2. 27. The miswak (chewing stick) and oral health : studies on oral hygiene practices of urban Saudi Arabians

    Författare :Meshari Al-Otaibi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chewing stick; DNA probe; miswak; oral hygiene; oral microbiota; Salvadora persica; subgingival plaque; Saudi Arabia;

    Sammanfattning : The miswak, a traditional chewing stick for cleaning teeth, is made from the plant Salvadora persica. For religious and cultural reasons, miswak use is firmly established and widespread in Saudi Arabia and most other Muslim countries. Only recently has scientific evaluation of the miswak been undertaken. LÄS MER

  3. 28. Novel and Traditional Risk Factors for Coronary Artery Disease : Role of Coronary Artery Calcium, Lipidomics, Psychosocial Factors and Diet

    Författare :Demir Djekic; Ole Fröbert; Annika Rosengren; Tuulia Hyötyläinen; Anna M. Nordenskjöld; Magnus Bäck; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Novel risk factors; coronary artery calcium; lipidomics; lipidome; psychosocial factors; vegetarian diet; gut microbiota; metabolome;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The aim of the research reported in this thesis was to determine the association of novel and traditional risk factors with coronary artery calcium (CAC), a marker of subclinical coronary artery disease (CAD) in healthy individuals. In addition, we investigated the effects of a vegetarian, compared to a meat diet, on novel and traditional risk factors in patients with diagnosed CAD. LÄS MER

  4. 29. Mathematical modelling of clinical applications in fluid therapy

    Författare :Peter M Rodhe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background: This thesis presents a new application of fluid kinetic analysis using mathematical tools to evaluate fluid therapy problems. Several models were developed to mathematically handle fluid distribution concerning bleeding and anaesthesia, arterio-venous differences in plasma dilution, peripheral fluid accumulation and differences in fluid distribution among young and elderly patients. 5. 30. Whole grain cereal products and baseline gut microbiota composition in metabolic and appetite regulation in healthy humans - Emphasizing rye and barley

    Författare :Jonna Sandberg; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; Type 2 Diabetes; Whole grain; Rye; Barley; Gut microbiota; Glucose regulation; Gut fermentation;

    Sammanfattning : The prevalence of obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) is increasing continuously worldwide. These metabolic diseases are associated with many health issues, including increased risk of depression and cognitive impairment. Whole grain (WG) has shown potential to prevent obesity, T2D and CVD.
