1. Vascular Effects of P2 Receptors. Changes in Congestive Heart Failure
Sammanfattning : Extracellular nucleotides induce dilatation and constriction of blood vessels by activation of P2 receptors. In this thesis the vasomotor effects of P2 receptor activation were studied in the rat mesenteric artery, and their changes in congestive heart failure (CHF) were evaluated using in vitro pharmacology, electrophysiology and competitive RT-PCR. 2. Vacuum-assisted closure in cardiac surgery - clinical outcome and vascular effects
Sammanfattning : The aim of this research was to clinically and experimentally evaluate the use of vacuum-assisted closure in poststernotomy mediastinitis after cardiac surgery. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) is a new wound-healing therapy based on the application of a local negative pressure to the wound. LÄS MER
3. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides
Sammanfattning : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). LÄS MER
4. The Plasma Contact System : New Functional Insights from a Hemostatic and Thrombotic Perspective
Sammanfattning : The physiological role of the plasma contact system still remains a partial enigma. The aim of the presented work was to expand our understanding of the plasma contact system, focusing on its physiological activation and function, principally from a hemostatic perspective. It also explored contact system activation under pathological conditions. LÄS MER
5. Lymphatic Vascular Morphogenesis : From Progenitors to Functional Vessels
Sammanfattning : The lymphatic vasculature is an important part of the circulatory system and crucial for normal functioning and maintenance of tissues. Yet, our understanding of the processes underlying lymphatic development and homeostasis are surprisingly limited. LÄS MER
