  1. 16. Dynamics of omnivorous crayfish in freshwater ecosystems

    Författare :Karin Olsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; crayfish; freshwater ecosystems; niche width; growth rate; stable isotope analysis; recruitment; RNA:DNA analysis; Ecology; food availability and quality; trophic position; population dynamics;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I examine the dynamics of crayfish in streams and lakes. I have studied the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on abundance, growth, trophic position, niche breadth, and recruitment of crayfish, by conducting field studies, an outdoor channel experiment and timeseries analysis. 2. 17. Modeling lichen performance in relation to climate : scaling from thalli to landscapes

    Författare :Anna V Jonsson Čabrajić; Kristin Palmqvist; Jon Moen; Per-Anders Esseen; Mikaell Ottosson-Löfvenius; Göran Ågren; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lichen; growth; model; micro-climate; hydration; activation; photosynthesis; respiration; Terrestrial ecology; Terrestisk ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Sammanfattning : Lichens can colonize nearly all terrestrial habitats on earth and are functionally important in many ecosystems. Being poikilohydric, their active growth periods are restricted to periods when the thallus is hydrated from atmospheric water sources, such as rain, fog and high relative humidity. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Formation stability and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces from first principles

    Författare :Jochen Rohrer; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; band structure; van der Waals interaction; electronic structure; graphane; graphene; atomic structure; growth; thin film; interface; density functional theory; CVD; Alumina; nucleation;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with two closely interwoven aspects of first-principle(density functional theory) materials modeling:(1)~prediction of atomic structure & chemical composition,and (2)~prediction of electronic properties.In the first part, we focus on atomic structure (AS) and chemical composition (CC) of surface and interface systems. 4. 19. Mechanisms and Biological Costs of Bacterial Resistance to Antimicrobial Peptides

    Författare :Hava Lofton Tomenius; Dan I Andersson; Ørjan Samuelsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; antimicrobial peptides; antibiotic resistance; fitness cost; Salmonella Typhimurium; Staphylococcus aureus; bile; serum; pH response; growth rate; mice; phoP; pmrB; waaY; LPS; LL-37; defensins; membrane potential; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Sammanfattning : The global increasing problem of antibiotic resistance necessarily drives the pursuit and discovery of new antimicrobial agents. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) initially seemed like promising new drug candidates. Already members of the innate immune system, it was assumed that they would be bioactive and non-toxic. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Analytical tools for monitoring and control of fermentation processes

    Författare :Heléne Sundström; Sven-Olof Enfors; Carl-Fredrik Mandenius; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Escherichia coli; flow cytometry; software sensors; viability; inclusion bodies; biomass; specific growth rate; stress; population heterogeneity; process analytical technology.; Biochemical process engineering; Biokemisk och bioteknisk processteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this work has been to adopt new developments and techniques in the area of measurement, modelling and control of fermentation processes. Flow cytometry and software sensors are techniques which were considered ready for application and the focus was set on developing tools for research aiming at understanding the relationship between measured variables and process quality parameters.
