21. Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry : Exploring the Limits of Different Sample Preparation Strategies
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes two different sample preparation strategies for inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), and their ability regarding multi element quantification in complex samples. Sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility and accuracy were investigated. LÄS MER
22. Interpreting the Script : Image Analysis and Machine Learning for Quantitative Studies of Pre-modern Manuscripts
Sammanfattning : The humanities have for a long time been a collection of fields that have not gained from the advancements in computational power, as predicted by Moore´s law. Fields like medicine, biology, physics, chemistry, geology and economics have all developed quantitative tools that take advantage of the exponential increase of processing power over time. LÄS MER
23. Development of quantitative optical microscopy methods for single cell analysis
Sammanfattning : Optical microscopy has brought powerful methods to biological research, in particular the possibility to assay dynamic molecular processes within living individual cells. This thesis deals with various aspects of fluorescence and Raman microscopy, such as the possibility of avoiding cellular damage or stress caused by illumination, how to manipulate single cells for spectroscopic analysis and how to quantify images automatically. 24. Quantitative bioimaging in single cell signaling
Sammanfattning : Imaging of cellular samples has for several hundred years been a way for scientists to investigate biological systems. With the discovery of immunofluorescence labeling in the 1940’s and later genetic fluorescent protein labeling in the 1980’s the most important part in imaging, contrast and specificity, was drastically improved. 25. Benthic diatoms in the Gulf of Bothnia : Community analysis and diversity
Sammanfattning : Benthic diatoms are valuable tools for biological monitoring and paleo-ecological reconstruction of past environmental conditions. This thesis aims at describing size-related properties of benthic diatoms and suggests that data assessment for community analysis can be improved by considering the importance of scale. LÄS MER
