1. Soil salinity as a driver of microbial community structure and functioning
Sammanfattning : Soil salinization is a pressing agricultural problem in many areas of the world, particularly in areas heavily reliant on irrigation agriculture. While the negative effects of salinity on crop plants have been widely studied, its effects on soil microorganisms have received less attention, and the impact of soil salinity on both microbial community structure and functioning is not well understood. 2. Macroalgae in the Baltic Sea : responses to low salinity and nutrient enrichment in Ceramium and Fucus
Sammanfattning : The brackish Baltic Sea is a marginal environment for both marine and freshwater species. The rate of ecological differentiation is presumably high due to strong selection pressure from a gradient of decreasing salinity that has been present in its current state for only about 3 000 years. 3. Capacitive Mixing for Extracting Concentration Gradient Energy
Sammanfattning : Capacitive mixing (CapMix) is a renewable method of extracting energy from the salinity gradient energy (SGE) between seawater and freshwater. The classical CapMix systems using solid electrodes generate electricity by periodically circulating seawater and freshwater into the CapMix system. LÄS MER
4. From geography to genes: evolutionary perspectives on salinity tolerance in the brackish water barnacle Balanus improvisus
Sammanfattning : How species respond to changes in their environment is a fundamental question in biology. This has become an increasingly important issue as anthropogenic effects of climate change and biological invasions have major impacts on marine ecosystems worldwide. LÄS MER
5. DISCO - Drivers and Impacts of Coastal Ocean Acidification
Sammanfattning : Ocean acidification, mainly attributed to the increasing anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere, is characterised by a lowering pH together with a shift in the sea water carbonate chemistry toward lower concentration of carbonate ions. On the coasts, where the environmental variability is high due to natural and human impacts, ocean acidification mainly affects the frequency, magnitude, and duration of lower pH and lower calcium carbonate saturation events.
